Bliss Balls

For when you just have to have a little treat.

Ingredients:

1. 1 cup of cashew nuts.

2. 2 tablespoons of raw Manuka honey.

3. 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract.

4 8 medjool dates pitted

5. 2 tablespoons of raw cocoa powder.

1 cup of desiccated coconut for coating.

Method>

Blend the cashews in a food processor until smoothish

Place all ingredients except the coconut in a blender. Except for the coconut and wiz until smooth.

With your hands roll the mixture into small balls.

Pour desiccated coconut on to chopping board and roll the balls in it.

Place the balls in the refrigerator until set.

Very nice little treat. 🤗 Enjoy ( macadamia nuts and figs are a good substitute for cashews and dates).

That is their name. An Aussie healthy treat. ( ish)

Healthy????? They are solid sugar! I could save myself the work and just eat a date - love them!

Rugger profile image
Rugger in reply toPMRpro

Not quite "solid sugar" - there's protein, fat, fibre, minerals and vitamins too.

Yeah, we're no all gaining weight and/or having elevated glucose levels.

Nutritious snacks are good to have around, especially in bite-sized portions.

Jane, I thought the title hinted at some sort of new therapy balls! Instead of which, something sounding much more yummy!

PMRpro profile image

Lordy - have you ever worked out the carb count!!!!!!!

SheffieldJane profile image
SheffieldJane in reply toPMRpro

Nope but they are filling and don’t seem to trigger the sugar monster in me. One’s enough. 🤭

PMRproAmbassador in reply toSheffieldJane

But how big (or small) is small?

SheffieldJane profile image
SheffieldJane in reply toPMRpro

Er think your best big marble when you were a child.

PMRpro profile image
PMRproAmbassador in reply toSheffieldJane

Hmmm - mine was a good inch diameter...

SheffieldJane profile image
SheffieldJane in reply toPMRpro

You made them already? Or is this a nesting thing and you are talking about Pignoli cookies?

SheffieldJane profile image
SheffieldJane in reply toPMRpro

I did reply but it disappeared. A big marble, size.

SheffieldJane profile image
SheffieldJane in reply toSheffieldJane

Now I have replied twice it must be the bliss ball.

HeronNS profile image

Dates and honey? My teeth ache thinking about it! I'll have the cashews au naturel though!

PMRpro profile image
PMRproAmbassador in reply toHeronNS

I love cashews - but getting unsalted ones is next to impossible!

SheffieldJane profile image
SheffieldJane in reply toPMRpro

I have been known to wash salted nuts. Macadamia nuts work if you want to try a bliss ball.

PMRpro profile image
PMRproAmbassador in reply toSheffieldJane

Have I seen macadamias here? Or only at prices that make the eyes water...

HeronNS profile image
HeronNS in reply toPMRpro

I think we can only get them at the Bulk Barn.

Rugger profile image
Rugger in reply toPMRpro

I get my cashews at ALDI - unsalted or roasted/salted.

PMRpro profile image
PMRproAmbassador in reply toRugger

Unfortunately ALDI hasn't reached Italy yet - although there are rumours! And they have a local stocking policy so might be very Italian...

They are! And gluten-free :-)

Which can’t be a bad thing.

No Aldi in Italy! thought they were everywhere by now - sure they'll be winging their way to you soon....

PMRpro profile image
PMRproAmbassador in reply toTelian

I think they are - there was an ad at the end of the village about jobs but that is all I have seen.

It is strange - I (like all other university wives) shopped at Aldi South in their homeland over 35 years ago. Everyone else in Bavaria comes to South Tirol, seems amazing Aldi hasn't made it yet!

Telian profile image
Telian in reply toPMRpro

It does they were in Oz first time we went 14 years ago and still thriving, - thought you were going to say you wanted a job there! only kidding..

Work???? Me??? Wash your mouth out with soap and water!!!!!!

Though if Mrs Maybe can't get her act together I may need a job to get healthcare cover after March 2019 until I'm 67 and get my miniscule Italian pension - which includes healthcare...

Telian profile image
Telian in reply toPMRpro

Oh no!!! and I know....dreadful situation might even be a news item.....

SheffieldJane profile image
SheffieldJane in reply toPMRpro

Do you mean the U.K., PM and leaving the EU is going to put ex- pats in that situation?

If so, yet another iniquity has passed me by.

PMRpro profile image
PMRproAmbassador in reply toSheffieldJane

Currently as a UK pensioner I have a permanent EHIC card for anywhere else in the EU and an Italian healthcare card for Italy (well, South Tirol actually, they told me it would be simpler to use the EHIC card in the rest of Italy - go figure). If they don't manage to sort an agreement out, we Brits living in the EU27 will be in the same position as EU migrants in the UK fear could be: no healthcare reciprocal agreement after March 2019. I worked here briefly so will have a tiny pension but not until my 67th birthday - the Italian system raised the pension age for women from 60 to 65 overnight a few years ago and since to 67. So from March to September 2019 when my pension will start I could have no healthcare cover.

There will be no reciprocal healthcare cover when you go on holiday - even for a day trip to Calais you will need a policy. Which with existing conditions can be rather pricey - cover for Europe currently factors in the reciprocal agreement. For 5 months living here I hate to think what it might cost! David has already suggested we spend 5 months touring the UK in the camper... Though I THINK our existing holiday medical cover would cover us for Europe - maybe that wouldn't be so bad!

Oh yes - there is a LOT that hasn't been mentioned. Many people moved to the UK from this side of the channel to work because the years they pay NI in the UK also count for their pension benefits in their home country when they return. That will no longer apply - so in future they may well have big holes in their entitlements at home. The same of course applies for Brits who chose to work abroad for some years. It makes a big difference to young people in the UK wanting/being able to go abroad to work for some years. My nephew's partner got a letter just a few weeks after the referendum telling him that if he remained in the UK he risked not getting full benefits in France at pension age. That was the final straw, they split up and he is now in The Netherlands. Actually - there are no guarantees Italy will let us stay even though we do have the precious bit of paper granting us permanent residency. a new government could argue that it was an agreement made when the UK was an EU member state and now they aren't. All the plans we made 15 years ago are based on shifting sand now. And no-one in the UK gubmint has had the courtesy to write to us telling any of us living here anything. They can't say they don't know we're here - they pay our pensions here and are fast enough to ask for our tax! ;-)

SheffieldJane profile image
SheffieldJane in reply toPMRpro

That is appalling. I know a number of people who will be impacted negatively. I demand another referendum. The last one was influenced by fake news, racism and downright lies.

PMRpro profile image
PMRproAmbassador in reply toSheffieldJane

No, no - JR-M (and his little friends) will tell you it was all scaremongering... I wish I knew what he thinks it will all achieve. A return to the 1960s that will magically sort out al the problems in the UK? Polution in London, NHS shortages...

SheffieldJane profile image
SheffieldJane in reply toPMRpro

I also heard quoted from the Institute of Economic Affairs that we will not notice any discernible benefit for at least 10 years but this is all about er making Britain great again for future generations.

HeronNS profile image
HeronNS in reply toPMRpro

I think the UK was not doing so well in the 60s? How time puts rose coloured glasses on our perceptions...!

Actually the gentleman referred to thinks they will return to the days of the Empire, if not of Queen Elizabeth 1!!!!!!!

They sound good ...have you tried less honey? Just wondered if it effected texture more than taste. I don't like things too sweet but dates are one of my favourites. The gylcemic loading might be doable and macadamia nuts are one of my faves too. I love a medjool date stuffed with a walnut. Yum.

PMRpro profile image
PMRproAmbassador in reply to

Even better with almond paste...

GOOD_GRIEF profile image
GOOD_GRIEF in reply toPMRpro

Pignoli with almond paste...great cookies!

SheffieldJane profile image
SheffieldJane

They don’t taste sweet like chocolate truffles ( in other respects that’s what they are like). I kid myself that the Manuka honey has health giving properties. 🤣 we could try less. Those quantities make a lot of bliss balls.

in reply toSheffieldJane

I have been try to find out if it's better to use maple or agave syrup but not much difference in terms of release of sugar. More fat equals slower release as does the fibre. I am thinking of rolling in more nuts.....like a lovely ferrero Roche.

Never mind Jane the idea is amazing and the moral is can be adjusted to individual taste...

SheffieldJane profile image

As long as something diverts me from chocolate, I’ll be happy.

EdithWales profile image

I am wondering about Manuka Honey and if it really makes a difference. Religiously eating it daily for 4 years, the strongest because I read it was the only one that made a difference but I am not sure it has other than it’s very expensive. It’s fine in the two for one penny sale but full price I am a beginning to question

Any thoughts? 🥂

in reply toEdithWales

For me I think of it more as a skin type treatment for ulcers etc. I believe the properties it's supposed to have are ruined if you heat/warm it so don't have in porridge or tea.

EdithWales profile image
EdithWales

I read that and never have it warm. It could solve itself as I have run out of it and am too mean to buy more unless it’s on some sort of offer, otherwise it’s £55 🥂

PMRpro profile image
PMRproAmbassador in reply toEdithWales

There is, of course, also the point that there is no way all the honey labelled as Manuka could exist according to the regs of the designation! So some of it much be a bit dodgy...

EdithWales profile image
EdithWales in reply toPMRpro

Exactly I buy Holland and Barrett who are supposed to be good but as you say its unregulated so I am thinking if it works good, I shall see if not taking it makes any difference 🥂

in reply toEdithWales

Scary price

SheffieldJane profile image

Mine was from Waitrose with some sort of certificate of authenticity. The real stuff comes from NZ doesn’t it?

PMRpro profile image
PMRproAmbassador in reply toSheffieldJane

Yup

manukanatural.com/blog/10-t...

claims 80% must be fraudulent. NZ produced 1700 tonnes in 2014 but 10,000 tonnes was sold around the world. Doesn't really add up does it?

EdithWales profile image
EdithWales in reply toPMRpro

Now I am really confused Holland and Barrett are usually very good and at £55 I expect it to be authentic. I will interrogate the staff when I go to the store

Bad day today, all ready for the Rheumatologist armed with my Prof Das Gupta Over heads and demanding to know why he still had me on Aspirin, why my CRP is 14 and my ESR only 10,I know CRP is more time relevant but I was also told it may never be normal. Why my ankles are puffy and can I still fly to Atlanta at the end of the month. I feel fine and am on 17.5 after 4 years.

As I said, ready for him, then his Secretary rings to say he has gone off sick so I have to save myself until next week.

Worst of all I have lost my excuse not to go swimming with my nagging daughter,I would so rather lie on my bed and do the Suduko or better still 🥂

I want to make a joke around bliss and balls but I will allow my better nature to triumph. What is “raw” honey anyway? Is the rest cooked?

in reply toSheffieldJane

If you can get some from a beekeeper in your local area they usually only mix from the hive. If you suffer hayfever it's apparently good to eat local honey. I presume it's like milk ...gets chucked together. I only buy a brand I feel comfortable with (normal honey). There was a bit thing about sugar syrup being sold as honey.

SheffieldJane profile image
SheffieldJane in reply to

I think there is something in that about local honey, kind of homeopathic .

I heard the story about cheap honey being sugar syrup.

Do you remember the swarm of bees in Sheffield City Centre, it made the News? They were from my son’s girlfriend’s dad’s hive! 🐝

in reply toSheffieldJane

Panic stations I bet...but they have to have a swarm once in a while. Hope he got his bees home.

I've made a batch, Jane and they're scrummy! I substituted the honey for organic maple syrup, which I had in the fridge. My mixture made 27 balls and I've worked out they contain about 3g carbohydrate and around 30 calories each - that's less than an apple and a more tasty treat!

I didn't work out the vitamins and minerals, but there's iron and calcium and magnesium.........

Thank you posting for the recipe.

in reply toRugger

I shal try downsizing recipe. If I make 27....there will not be 26 left by the next day. I wonder if they freeze. I think I might prefer maple.

Rugger profile image
Rugger in reply to

I considered making half quantity, but thought it wouldn't cover the blades of my food processor, which I think would have been the case. The mixture is very dense and doesn't look a lot when it's blended down. I used level teaspoonfuls and they rolled into about 2cm / 3/4" diameter. I'll put one in the freezer and let you know.

I was thinking one-a-day like my multivitamin and mineral tablet! They are very satisfying as well as nourishing!

in reply toRugger

I await the results. It's my night time post sleeping tablet persona that gets me into trouble. It seems okay at the moment...usually comes out when I am super stressed. I am hoping to get to the shop today. I mayux in soya protein too...like those bounce balls which don't sound as nice as bliss balls. 😁

Rugger profile image
Rugger in reply to

Just munching a defrosted Bliss Ball - perfick! I can't tell the difference between this and the freshly made ones. There's so little moisture content, so no ice crystals to alter the texture. It came out of the freezer, rattling round like one of Jane's marbles! Don't be tempted to eat them frozen, or a visit to the dentist could follow.

Mine are in a container in the fridge, but I may keep them in the freezer.

The maple syrup flavour comes through really well, but I expect the honey does too.

Enjoy.

in reply toRugger

Great. I will definitely be making some.
