Distraction therapy?

One of my favourite blogs is Rheumablog - a recent blog was about winter and the rainy season and coping with symptoms when we have our own rainy season and feel so much worse. And when others don't seem to be aware or care.

It bears a read

Thank you for this PMRpro,

So true...

I'm normally a glass half-full lady as you know, and fortunately don't get many rainy season days.....but just occasionally one pops up and wallops me in the face.

I know I'm lucky, I live in a beautiful part of the world, even in winter, and a trip just to watch the sea and it's ever changing moods is the boost I need!

I've just had a few weeks of really being down in the dumps - finally the flare that's been hatching since before Christmas has been dealt with as I know works so the pain is gone AND the sun has come out for a couple of days!!! In 10 days we go to Malta - where it will be warmer but also sunnier. I wish we could have our old winters back here!

I have been riding the black dog for a couple of weeks too. Today I struggled to get out of the car. Hello old friend (PMR) so you’re back.

Think it’s the weather, we all feel a bit lower when it cold and gloomy!

It’s lovely to go away to the sun like we both did, but it then becomes even harder when you get back ... and missing family I guess.

That’s it, I can’t deny it, all personified in one small boy who misses me too.

So sorry you were feeling unwell. You followed the advise in the uplifting article by nurturing and supporting all of us on the forum. Thanks.

Food for thought, thank you for sharing 😘

Thanks for the link. It certainly does have a lot of good advice for those of us who have hidden medical problems and also a reminder that others do too.

I bet there are people, who spend their winters in Spain (or somewhere warmer) and return to the UK for the rest of the year. Someone spent her winter months in Thailand and Philippines, she told me it was too hot there. It's too far for me. I wish someone started a thread on this subject. I was ill all through winter months. Don't forget, Winter will be back again to attack you, beat you up until you are a wreck. It's nice to know people do understand.

Nothing to stop you starting such a thread.

Actually, in my experience, many people may spend the summer in Spain and come back to the UK for the winter, from about Christmas, judging by people I have travelled on ferries with. They can't spend more than 6 months in Spain without becoming liable for a lot of taxes - I can't spend more than 3 months in the UK without the same thing applying. The largest group of winter migrants i know are Canadians who spend their winter in the southern USA or central America.

And it depends on the winter - ours are far colder but normally much drier than the UK and that suits me down to the ground.

Thank you PMRpro.

I prefer one of the high profile posters to do so if possible. ;-) I have been discussing this possibility in my real life, but nothing dramatically "ideal" turned up. If you're in North America, Mexico would be ideal/cheap.

I know what you mean. I checked the daily humidity until recently, to assess "going-out-ability" for the crippled (me). I noticed my hands get frozen quite badly, not that I feel cold today (well above atmospheric temp. 8C which is very, very warm) and looked visibly purple (likely the blood coagulating). Based on what I read, inflammation will not abate in our age group except those who are very lucky.

I hope your symptoms are not too bad at the moment and you're enjoying 100% spelt pizza!

I can't start a thread about something I don't know about - and I really don't understand what you want to say.

However, I don't know what you have been reading but many people are able to get off pred altogether, albeit it takes several years. The inflammations CAN and DOES go away

Useful to have some hope, you know? :) Oh, I was only joking. Since the idea of staying somewhere warmer in winter has been going on for the past 3 decades, at least (since I became first ill whilst I continued working) - it is probably going to remain as a fantasy. Thank you for being so thoughtful. Installing a sauna and some serious counselling for SAD might be a better idea (no long journey involved) :-) Have a nice weekend.

Than you PMRpro

It was well received!

Thank you for posting this lovely blog. She’s so right and it is a real test of self control to stay in that zone. That’s another benefit of this forum, if you concentrate on other people’s problems you do forget your own and often feel very lucky.
