That was an incredibly fast and rather brutal reduction you went through, having only been diagnosed in January 2017. I am not surprised that it has messed you about mood wise. Hopefully this will settle once your body gets used to a steady dose of Pred and subsequent reductions are much slower. You seem to have an extreme version of the irritability that most of us experience. It will pass, it’s horrible. Warn your loved ones that it is the drug talking not you. Get plenty of rest away from the noise and stress.
Hi jura
I just wondered how controlled blood sugar is. I am sure you know that hyper and hypos can cause mood swings and irritability. My family know to either ask me to test blood and/ or shove glucose down my throat if I start to get a bit bolshy. I know that at higher dose of pred I kept having feeling a of impending doom that didn't help much. The impact of having a flare after quick reduction won't help your mood either. I would keep an eye out for it over the coming days and if it's still bothering you seek advice from Dr. It can be a sign of depression too which would be understandable in the circumstances. 🌻
Yeah, my husband says I'm better off walking NYC streets without the shillelagh because I'm likely to beat my way through the crowd.
Seriously, it's something we all deal with as our bodies deal with varying levels of cortisol while we're taking and quitting pred and in the aftermath of not taking pred.
Just be aware that it's the cortisol, or lack thereof, and not something else. Pause and think whether your response is proportionate to the situation.
And yes, I think NYC holiday crows should be navigated with the aid of a shillelagh.
Mood swings are common with being on pred - but having had 5 years of PMR wittout pred I can also tell you that PMR itself can cause them too. I was very stroppy!
That is a totally cock-eyed way to manage PMR - and I'd suggest you look for a doctor who knows what they are doing because your current doctor doesn't. PMR lasts at least 2 years for most people, if it goes sooner the chances are it wasn't the PMR we talk about here. A SLOW taper is essential and what you did wasn't slow!
I think mental/mood problems are more common than Doctors seem to acknowledge as side effects from steroids. When I was first diagnosed with PMR - because I was atypical - I was
started on just 10 mgs by the Rheumatologist. I ended up having a violent episode, quite out of character. My dose was immediately reduced to 7.5 mgs. This resolved the problem. Yes, I know these are lower than usual doses but it worked for me. Everyone is different.
