Snow

I have just thawed out from clearing the snow off my car which was approx 1.5" thick but strangely only about 1/2" on the ground. The sun is shining at the moment so should dissolve the rest, hopefully. I live on the edge of the Peak District which is lovely but can be a nightmare in a bad Winter and we always get it worse being on higher ground. The reason I am posting this is that I am intending going to my first attendance at the Ilkley meeting next Tuesday and hope that I can still make it but just in case I can't, my apologies to the Organiser if she logs into this Post.

Season's Greetings to All.

I haven't ventured out today but spent the morning making a BIG pan of Minestrone soup and divided it up for the freezer in readiness of future bad weather. It won't get wasted tho' if we don't get anymore, (wishful thinking!) D

I am really, really looking forward to snow here in south London. Love it!

I don't suppose you get much snow in London but this is the place to be if you or yours like sledging (or perhaps tobogganing? in your case). You may just get snow this weekend looks likely. D ⛄️

oh gosh. ANOTHER English word I don't know... Sledging!!! (sledding? to go sliding!) I love my vocabulary education nearly as much as the PMR one!

I noticed sledge as well. Looked it up and it appears that although both sledge and sled are old words for the same thing sled is now considered North American and sledge has no regional restriction.

in reply toHeronNS

Hello Heron. I was just in the process of looking up sledge in case it was just a Derbyshire word and it says it's a "vehicle" with runners for use on snow!! Loved it when I was younger but now enjoy watching the youngsters having fun in the snow (when we have enough which didn't happen the last two years) Thank you

or you can circumvent the whole issue by using the transportation vehicle designed by our aboriginal people, the toboggan.

Merriam-Webster says

"Definition of sledge for Students

: a strong heavy sled"

Collins has the most comprehensive offering and gives not only synonyms but a very international list of words:

Just to confuse you even more “sledging” when used by sportsmen -Australian cricketers, more precisely to Englishmen - means to harangue, wind-up, harass, or generally put the opposition off their game.

like heckling?

Yep, very similar. Although some of the Aussie cricketers in the past have let it get a bit personal. But there’s always great rivalry between the Aussies and the Brits in any sport.

That definition is included in the Collins link I gave. I didn't mention it as I thought I might have to explain cricket...

is it possible to explain cricket? :D

There is a wonderful tea towel - you'll find images if you google tea towel cricket.

This is it

espncricinfo.com/ci/content...

I think it is unnecessarily complicated - it is a perfectly sensible game ...

HeronNS in reply toPMRpro

Haha. I'm sure I've seen this before. In fact our family may at one time have owned one of the tea towels.

in reply toPMRpro

BrilliantPRoprI don't know where you get them from and how better could the game of cricket be explained!! HERON?

Easier than American 🏈 football. Which as you know is not the same as European football ⚽️ (soccer on your side of the pond)!

I hate American football, and the Canadian version of same. It takes a good three hours to play 60 minutes. My boys played soccer, and the use of football as its name is becoming more common here. I sort of understand soccer because the rules seem a lot like those for field hockey which I was subjected to at school. However I'm basically not a sports fan, unless there is a sort of show involved, as in figure skating, ice dancing, some track and field, or anything to do with horses.

Hope,

Yes football positions are similar to field hockey - as you say - bit of a demon on the right wing in school days - no wonder I’ve got dodgy knees nowadays.

Although footie is alledgedly our national game our family is more into rugby union. Oval ball like American football, but that’s about where the similarity ends. Tough game, but brilliant to watch especially when played well.

Canada not in the top tier, but they usually put out a good team when the World Cup comes around every 4 years.

Interest and participation in soccer has been growing rapidly, in part I think because it's not nearly as expensive a game to put your child into as hockey, and generally more appealing for young children than baseball. My younger son played rugby with his school and one of my former co-workers and his girlfriend were both very active on regional rugby teams. Now my older boy runs (Boston Marathon earlier this year) and younger one is much too sedentary despite family nagging and encouragement.

Don't like football (soccer) but do like horses such wonderful and intelligent animals. Snow again yesterday/last night cleaned car off again. To top it all have no heating or hot water this morning and awaiting the maintenance people ringingme back. Fortunately I have an electricheater. They just rang and will deal with it in turn!! I wonder why this reply goes into a narrowstrip? D

Replies get skinnier and skinnier until they can't get any skinnier, as long as we stay on the same thread. I hope you get your heat and hot water soon.

I love the snow. Everything looks clean. Every one else walks like I do on daily basis. I have spikes from Scandinavia for crutches and boots in case I have to go out. Mmm. Soup. 🐧

I have those Icebug boots (and running shoes with the spikes) they are worth their weight in gold. NO FALLING. No trying to get things ON the boot and losing them. Walking on ICE! hooray

Message received re Ilkley, Dot. Don't take any risks. We'll let everyone know when the next date is decided.

I was born in Derby and lived many years in Sheffield, so I'm envious. Although, living in West Yorkshire with access to the Dales is lovely too.

My snow-clearing days are on hold, but it's an occupation I loved pre PMR!
