Sorry can't help Miguel, it sounds painful. All I know is Pred seems to suppress old systems and when you get on to the lower doses they pop back up again. In my case Psoriasis and Arthritis.

Thanks. Crazy disease. But keeping the faith

Had gout off & on for many years in big toe & ankle. It's caused by excess uric acid forming crystals in the joints. Very painful & not comical. Cure for myself was Allopurinol taken every day prescribed by my GP. Something to do with kidney function I think! Not rich living!!! Hope that helps. ATB

Hi, my husband got gout years ago and was also prescribed allopurinonol. He then got kidney stones. He drinks lots of water and free of gout and kidney stones. I think the water would flush out excess uric acid.? All the best.

Johns Hopkins doesn't think there is a link

I think it is probably coincidence and pred can be used to manage gout. If you aren't on allopurinol as well then reducing the pred dose may be allowing the gout back.

However- long before I developed PMR the joints of both my big toes were sore and I couldn't wear shoes, I became the Birkenstock girl summer and winter. It had stopped and was no longer painful before the PMR started and has never come back. I don't think it was gout.

Have you got a firm dx? By that I mean have you raised uric acid and have they checked the type of crystals in the joint? Other things can cause similar symptoms - psuedogout and inflammatory arthritis for example.

Diet can really affect gout. Eat dark Cherries. Stay away from shell fish asparagus and alcohol. Allopurinol is really the ticket but search for Gout diets.

Right on yogabonnie. High protein diet / purines certainly don't help. Think that's where the rich living + alcohol mockery of gout came from in days of old! Gets more difficult to find a way through all diet crap nowadays though! ATB

Thanks for information. Eating the right foods is a challenge. Hope this gout flair won’t stop my tapering
