My wrists ached with PMR and are the first place to show signs of a flare. I put on a lot of weight generally - but I think my wrists were quite swollen. All back to normal now.

Hi PMRpro - can you please enlighten me as to why this is the first place to show signs of a flare?

I would be most interested to know considering I have had this when trying to taper and thought it was possibly signs of arthritis being magnified with the wee drop in steroid as is now evident in some fingers. I have since returned to the previous amount I tapered.

Blessings in advance.

Several people I know with PMR say their flares appear in their "weakest point". I had a lot of wrist and forearm pain with PMR pre-pred and that's what seems to shout first when there is a flare. I also get back pain in one particular spot.

As to why - no idea, it is just so!!! ;-)

When my PMR was diagnosed 2.5 years ago I had very painful carpel tunnel but can't remember pains in wrist. I got my preds down to 1mg but arm pain returned as did carpel tunnel. Now also have swollen & painful wrists. Tests have shown CT is severe & in need of surgery. I feel confused as to whether wrist pain is PMR or CT - even though I know they are related. Preds now up to 3mg. This illness continues to mystify me. Hope you get answers bumpermac

Hi patdencass - what I can tell you via a Thyroid Spec. some years ago gave a lecture & mentioned that carpel tunnel can be thyroid related. Not sure if that is 100% across the board for all of us with PMR, but I note for myself carpel tunnel very mild pain intermittently but it does settle without too much a do.

I too have a hypothyroid which I take meds for - recent bloods proved OK so not sure what is going on?

Maybe have your thyroid check via blood test next visit to your GP - that will at least eliminate that line of enquiry.

Blessings :)

Thanks for that Megams. Someone else mentioned that to me recently but GP didn't seem to agree but having another blood test next week so will get it done. Take care & thanks again 😊
