I am in bed as I write this....having downed tools at work and come straight home...Yesterday morning I was only saying that since new year I felt I MAY have turned a corner PMR wise as I felt a little bit better these days.... me and my mouth! I was busy at work yesterday and in the course of my work had to push through several large very heavy doors many many times through the day and also kneel down to measure ( the same today until I came home) This morning I woke up with that awful pain in my shoulders a bit in my neck and also pain in my groin on both sides. It is not the pain you get from doing alot of exercise. I also feel very tired.. It seems unbelievable that pushing open doors has caused this but I can not think what else coud have. I am currently doing the dsns method from 9 to 8 and half.... it has also got very cold down here in Kent and for 3 days I have been caught in mega traffic jams due to a burst water pipe that has seen a major A road shut. I am wondering if all of this has been too much though before pmr I wouldnt have even questioned anything. Any thoughts be appreciated.

That all sounds like a recipe for disaster with PMR! Above all, those doors!

But I'd also suspect there is a bit more going on in the shoulder/neck area and low back. If it were me I'd see if I could find a physio/sports massage/Bowen therapist (since you don't have to beg for a referral) and see if they can provide a bit of relief. PMR is good at add-ons and they often respond to a bit of targeted TLC.

As I have heard a lot about Bowens I think I will try that ... thanks

I've had a private message today and a post on another thread telling me that the senders had benefited from it - one lady went home after a session and slept for about 11 hours instead of the 5 or 6 she's been having! If it does no more than help us sleep it's worth it in my book!

I don't particularly care how or why a complementary therapy functions as long as it is legal. If it works for me - that is all that matters. If it is placebo effect - does that matter if it relieves my pain or helps me sleep?

Yes, it all sounds the perfect recipe for disaster. You mention pushing heavy doors many times and it is this type of repetitive exercise which PMR muscles don't like.

PMR also loves stress of any kind and it positively eats traffic jams - even if you are a passenger! It seems that you need to take it easy for a few days - are you able to take time off work? If resting and being kind to yourself for a few days don't work then you may have to consider increasing the Pred dose if you want to work it that way round. If it were me, I'd increase now and also rest for as long as possible.

Luckily I dont work fridays.... I only do 30 hrs term time only as it is so if I had the misfortune to work full time I would definately not cope as struggle alot of the time as it is... I am going to look in to Bowens as suggested before and try to rest over the week end( my granddaughter is due later for the night and all day tomorrow though my husband is around to help get her in to bed) I really am trying to reduce the steroids but its such a small reduction I cant believe thats the cause

Even a very small reduction can be enough to make a very big difference - especially if you combine it with overdoing it at the same time! I can be fine at one dose and definitely not at only 1/2mg less!

Hi it's not necessarily the reduction, but on top of all the other stresses you have, it won't help.

Go back to previous dose, and stay there for at least a couple of weeks until you get yourself sorted. As you say it's getting colder so that won't help either - it's a shock to every bodies system!. Just forget the reduction for a little while - keep warm, and rest when you can! Take care!

Thank you DorsetLady. My reply is slow as for some reason my emails didnot download automatically. I am soo reluctant to increase my dose... I am getting more and more down about this illness and the slowness of being able to decrease and the uncertainties of the flares pain etc. I am not even sure my boss believes me when I suddenly say I am too unwell to work. I sometimes still dont believe it all myself! I havent particularly rested today but did overnight and will do this week end but my shoulders are definately less painful so I do think it was the stress of opening those doors. A colleague is going to come on Monday and help me as I am in the same place having to do the same again as otherwise I will be back to square one.

I've had PMR for just about 11 years now. I used to get upset at how it went on and on. Now I accept the relief that the adequate dose of pred gives me to allow me to have a life. I've recently decided to go back to 5mg from 4mg - it's better QOL and cheaper as it happens (only 1 tablet to pay for instead of 2).

We only have one go at this mortal coil (depending of course on how you look at it) so we might just as well be comfortable physically. We're a long time dead - and allowing PMR to win and make living an unpleasant pasttime just doesn't seem worth it.

Hi pmrdec112014

I can understand so much of your thoughts. I was diagnosed in June with pmr/gca, worked through my full time job feeling awful, had 3 weeks off in October - GP saying must return with reduced hours, this didn't happen, had another flare back last week, back up to 20mgs Pred and now signed off for a month. I cannot cope with a full day at work, and if stress is included this tires an confuses me even more. Like you - I still have trouble accepting and believing this myself, I keep thinking it must all be a mistake! I try and carry on as normal at work but it is impossible. It has changed my life, me and everything I think and do - pain is always with me to some degree, depression (which I have never suffered from), fatique and all the horrible side effects of the steroids . (not least of all weight gain and moon face)

This forum is great for reminding us we are not alone - our journey may be solitary but lots of others are on the same path - I am learning the hard way, I must take more care of myself or this journey is going to be even longer. Financially, it is a problem, but our health must surely come first.

I hope you are feeling a little better that when you wrote this post, we sometimes have to accept we need help and support.

Thank you for your comments lesley2015. So sorry you have this awful illness too. If I had an enemy I wouldnt wish this on them. Your words were comforting and much of what you have written is like looking in the mirror. I do feel better today although I still have a stabbing pain in my right shoulder ( i am left handed). I am not sure whether that is pmr or something else. If you dont mind me asking ...how old are you. I am 52 and a half and was diagnosed dec2015. I am hoping acceptance comes soon. You.take care and I am hoping to follow your posts and watch your journey x
