Started at 80mg in April 2012, long story, late diagnosis. After about a year, glaucoma pressure rose. Seen by eye clinic, just monitored, not bad enough for medication. After about a year, and with decreasing Pred, the pressures are back to normal, and discharged from clinic.
You do need to be aware of any loss of vision, as that could be a sign of GCA, but not necessarily unless you get other head irregularities- neck pains, scalp tenderness, jaw claudication etc.
I assume you are seeing Ophthamologist. Good luck when you do.
Raised eye pressures can be a side effect of pred, yes, and that is why it is important to have an eye test regularly when taking it. At one time patients taking pred were entitled to an eye test every year on the NHS but something was changed about that a year or so ago. However, I think if your GP requests a test it can still be done - but the optician is the best person to ask about that. Since you have already been told you have glaucoma you will now be looked after properly anyway.
One or two people on the forums have had raised eye pressures and they were managed well with eye drops. I'm sure others will be along to tell their story.
I had raised pressure in both eyes a year ago, diagnosed at an eye test which was thought to be the start of glaucoma but turned out to be the start of cataracts in both eyes with have just been operated on in the last three months.....two month gap after the first. I was told this was caused by the steroids....I had been taking them for 2 years then.
Thankyou all for your reply . Interestingly my optician said that the government have changed the check up time for national health . It is now every 18 months instead of 12 . Nice to now that they are looking after us ??!!
The main thing is to be monitored, not only for your pressure, but the back of your eye too - most good opticians do this now along with visual field tests, at least being known to have a raised IOP you are in the system so to speak. Any changes to your vision or increased headaches seek help immediately. ( it sounds like you are very on the ball though ) 😃 Oh dear this all sounds very bossy , but I was an ophthalmic nurse for many years and passionate about eyes.
I was diagnosed with glaucoma before I started the Prednisone for PMR/GCA.
I have had increased IOP I the mid and upper twentys. My ophthamologist now has me on three different eye drop prescriptions I have to return in 5-6 weeks to see if the IOP levels are coming down. I am presently on Presdnisone 40mg because of a GCA flareup a month ago. Our eyesight is so important to maintain as long as possible.
I just encourage you to get good follow up with your optician/ opthamologist.
I, too , have increased eye pressure -actually 35! I take drops am and pm and it's improving. My steroids have also stepped up the progression of cataracts.
My doctor said I can do surgery anytime but am kinda waiting for rest of symptoms to settle a little. Diagnosed January 2015. Vision not clear. Fortunately I.have fabulous insurance. The things that are the worst for are.
Weight gain
Blurred vision
Headache
A sad commentary....everybody says to me- you still have that same disease
I have been on Pred for over three years nor. Developed acute angle glaucoma and eye drops and laser treatment etc couldn't reduce pressure. I was told that long term steroids had probably contributed to the raised pressure. I was referred to eye hospital and the consultant recommended that I had both lenses replaced to reduce the pressure. Same as a cataract operation. Almost immediately the pressure went back to normal and I had new eyesight too!!! I have been on 5mgs of Pred for some months now but unfortunately have had a bad flare up of symptoms so have had levels put back up to 15mgs. Slight tenderness at temples too so being monitored a little more closely.
I am lucky to have a good doctor and very good ophthalmic support. Hope your eyes settle down but if surgery is suggested, and its right for you, it does work!!
Thankyou for you comforting reply . My optician wrote to my doctor the same day as I saw her and faxed the letter to . Managed to see my doctor ( thankfully to her having a cancellation ) 3 days later . She said she would right the referral straight away and two days later I was phoned by the hospital and have an appointment for 3 weeks time . Cannot believe how efficiant everything has gone so far .
So fingers crossed my eyes will be sorted sooner than later . I hope you stay in a good place with your eyes . It isn't until there is a chance of loosing ones sight that you become scared witless .
It doesn't sound like you've been on steroids long enough for the Glaucoma and you probably have been on a lesser dose of prednisone since that is what is required by PMR. It could be a coincidence. You may never know. Just take care of it.
