ESR is a general measure of inflammation in the body. The inflammation can be caused by PMR. When I first was diagnosed my ESR was 127. The lowest has been in the thirties and it shot up to 60 when I had a cold, it is now 52. My CRP which is a better indicator of inflammation people think, started at 123 and is now 6, which is pretty good. I asked the consultant about my high ESR and he just laughed and said not to worry. I assume you are taking pred. Is your ESR coming down? It can take a while and does not reduce quite as quickly as CRP.

Ricky, as piglette has said, the ESR blood test is a measure of inflammation. Contributors to this forum have a condition called Polymyalgia Rheumatica and/or Giant Cell Arteritis and often have raised markers of inflammation at diagnosis which reduce with steroid treatment. Your ESR is somewhat raised but could point to a simple virus or infection lurking about somewhere in your body. Best to check with your GP, especially regarding your hand numbness.
