Neck Ache

Hi have been on 5mg for about two months without much pain, but the last couple of weeks I have started with neck ache spreading to the top of my shoulders and muscle soreness in my buttocks, I feel like I want a good massage but not sure if that's advisable? Could this be another flare up? Should I increase my steroids? Any advice appreciate

Hello Donna, from what you describe it does sound as if it could be the beginnings of a flare. I would definately be inclined to up my pred dose to the last dose where you felt pain free. Good luck, regards, tina

Don't let it get away! After 2 months you would think you would be OK but there is some thought that the autoimmune process varies and is more active at some times than others. If you reduced at a quiet period it may be your dose isn't quite enough.

I'd also suggest trying Bowen therapy - you may have overdone it while feeling well and your back in general is protesting. It is better tolerated by PMR patients than massage but is a similar cost. I like massage but it can release cytokines into the system if it is over-enthusiastic and you might feel as if you are having a flare. It will pass as you get them out of your system - so if you choose massage just be aware it can happen.
