I have been taking gabapentin, which is it's older sister, for some time now. I did try pregabalin (Lyrica) but had to change back to gaba as I got some side effects which didn't help.

Out of curiosity, have you been prescribed them for PMR alone? I was given them to cope with nerve pain.

I wasn't good on it, Abigail, and only lasted for two weeks. I think my consultant was trying to kill two birds with one stone - I have fibro and peripheral neuropathy and I think it was meant to cope with both. Shame it failed on both counts! For some it really does tick all the boxes, though.

My sister was prescribed Lyrica, it worked for pain but she had a massive weight gain, it's worth reading all the small print and weighing up the advantages. she did some research and came off them, there was also a recent study on Gabapentin which basically slammed them, I don't have the link but I do know it was also in the Daily Mail. Might be useful to Google to get all the facts.

The only reason I can think of for giving you Lyrica is that your doctor either thinks you have fibromyalgia as well as PMR - or he doesn't know the difference between the two.

Lyrica is used as fairly standard medication for fibromyalgia, it may or may not work. There are a few overlaps in symptoms between fibromyalgia and PMR - but lyrica doesn't work for PMR.

In the US Lyrica is advertised constantly on tv right now. It is one of Big Pharma's current favorite money makers. It is advertised for Fibromyalgia only.

Mercifully that isn't allowed in the UK! OTC medications are advertised in the rest of Europe but nothing like it is in the US. It's the images they used - someone with RA bouncing around the tennis court after one dose!

If I see one more advertisement for Cialas during a football game I am going to run out of the room screaming. The interesting thing is most of the "designer drugs" that are advertised don't deal with serious problems & many of the new drugs are not as tried and true as the old timers. They have passed FDA, but often unknown side effects are not known until later & the studies can be skewed.

Absolutely! I suppose it isn't quite the idea for a football game you want to watch live - but the best thing about Sky in Europe (our version of pay-TV) is you can record and watch without ads!!! The only reason for ad breaks is to make a cup of tea or go to the bathroom...

Hi

I was prescribed lyrica for nerve pain, I get sciatica after a back injury. It does work for the nerve pain and I don't have any side effects but when I was on gabapentin I was getting some bad side effects, but we are all different and what works for one doesn't always work for the other.

Hi Abigal1

I'm taking 2x75mg Lyrica at night for Nerve pain (a monster headache/ facial nerve pain) it's absolute great and works brilliantly for me.

I felt weird and wonderful when I took them in the day, so, Dr suggested a night time dose and no side effects. If there are any I just sleep through them.

As for weight gain, well, I'm no bigger after 8 months of medication.

Good luck :-)
