PBC and another auto immune

My doctor gave me Ursodiol 500 mg and propranolol 10 mg. If I take 500 mg it will give me watery diarrhea. When I take 250 mg it is ok for several doses. It will get to the point of not feeling well, unablre to function very well and I get very mean which isn't my personally. So, I stop taking the med and I feel better and not so mean.

The Ursodiol is very expensive, I wonder is there another med I can take. I will not take the med because the way it made me feel.

Hi Max

Do you know why your doctor gave you propanolol? Its a drug thats used to treat a number of disorders, primarily (as far as I know, and I'm not a medical professional) its used to treat heart problems as well as anxiety and others.

It is known to cause diarrhea.

There is only one other drug used to treat PBC and its extremely expensive, emphasis on the extremely. It makes Urso look affordable.

I know that some people have problems with the fillers in the Ursodiol medication. Talk to your pharmacist (and most importantly, talk to your doctor!) and ask them about the fillers in the brand of Urso you were given. Most pharmacist will work with you and try to give you a different brand.

Are you on Medicare? Do you have an advantage plan and drug plan? I'm on both of those and my Urso is paid for except for a copay.

Dont give up. If you dont take your Urso your liver will decompensate and your risk of ending up in the hospital with a failing liver is fairly high, depending on which stage of PBC you are at.

I'm 72 and I wasnt diagnosed until 4 years ago. I've luckily had no problems with the Urso and my liver has responded well to the Urso.

Good luck and dont give up!

Yes Urso is very expensive! My prescription is usually almost $800.00 for 3 months but I found Good RX, which took it down to &100.00 for 3 months. Download the app, look up your medication, show the pharmacy the codes they need. You will get the discount from then on. I have no other insurance at all.

Hope this helps.

Blessings, Anni

Hi Max,

I had trouble with an urso filler. I take the capsules that are 300mg and I take 4 a day…either 2 in the morning and evening or all in the evening. I have no problem with them. Maybe your doctor can possible try the 300mg. I find capsules don’t bother me and sometimes tablets do.

Good luck

I don't experience mood changes, or if I do then I didn't attribute it to the urso. I find that I can only take the Ursofalk branded capsules as I received a different one which caused constipation. I have had to change my diet because constipation is now much more likely than diarrhea. I am in the UK so I don't know if this brand is available everywhere.
