Anyone else suffering from this?

There can be many reasons for this. Consider the following, which are suited for most people:

- chew every bit of food very well. If there are dentition/teeth problems, solve them with your dentist, food unwell masticated can cause many digestive upsets.

- increase your fiber intake - psyllium, flax seeds, various cereals, fruits and vegetables.

- don't eat hastily or agitated, you swallow more air that way when you eat

- Carum Carvi (caraway) seeds tea might help, one cup after meals (not only for flatulence)

- reduce to a minimum your soda drinks/soda water intake

- avoid eating fruits after a meat meal. The fermentation time of meat is much higher than that of fruits, which can cause gas accumulation, flatulence, cramps etc.

I went through a period of suffering flatulence after I started taking urso. I had a few inital side-effects with urso in the beginning (started urso Dec 2010) but these disappeared after a few months.

I know if you've cut back on dietary fibre and then eat quite a lot you will more than likely suffer from temporary flatulence which then vanishes.

I still think urso can be the cause of certain digestive problems over time. I go through bouts of constipation, something I never ever had prior to starting on urso.

Peppermint oil capsules can be of good benefit for this and also temporary heartburn, much better than getting some OTC medication in my view.

Hi, I also think urso is the cause of this as when I don't take urso I don't get it. what i mean is sometimes I have to stop my urso to get my stomach working correctly.

Hope you understand what I mean.

I do suffer extremely smelly flatulance which has now become a family joke! I think its worse if I eat bread, cereals etc So maybe I'm becoming intollerant to wheat? Which I understand is quite common with pbc. I've been to my doctor who saya the only way to test is for me to eat loads of wheat for 3 months and then get tested. But I get really bloated and stomach cramps if I eat too much wheat/oats.

Hello roseter.

Well my reckoning on a doctor telling me the info you mentioned would be to take no notice but steer clear of anything with gluten if you think that could be the problem and take up a gluten-free one and see if there is a difference.

My son had one to many courses of antibiotics a couple yrs ago and started with diarrhoea. Ended up being referred to hospital after bloods ok. Camera test he had came back showing nothing but it was thought the antibiotics were to blame and the doctor reckoned he was suffering from what could be a temporary gluten allergy with regards to wheat.

He seems fine with gluten-free and even oats and slowly he's becoming more tolerant to the slightly increasing wheat in his diet once more.

I think you'd know yourself if you felt much better by trying gluten-free (specifically wheat) first for a while and seeing what results you get. Then perhaps eating with gluten again and finding out perhaps?

PS I know there is a blood test for coeliac sprue and that can be a cause of abnormal LFTs prior to one being tested and diagnosed with PBC.

Thanks for your advice peridot, I shall go wheat free for a while and see if I'm better. x
