Yes Janice, the pain at times is so horrible and don't even need to be wearing shoes or actually walking, right now they are fine but a couple of weeks ago the pain was constant

I had bunion surgery, both feet, a few years ago. This was way before PBC diagnosis. Bunions are very painful, even a sheet covering your feet at night can cause pain. Also, left unchecked it makes it hard to find shoes that fit.

Recovery was painful but well worth it.

Sure hope you don't end up with bunions but if you do, the surgery is a permanent fix for this condition.

Best of luck to you

Thank you girls. x

HiI have arthritis in my big toe joint, but its defo not a bunion. With a bunion your big toe covers your other toes as its pushed inwards. Mine has stayed in the right position but the joint itself is very swollen. I see a podiatrist for this.

I have two big lumps on each foot at the big toe joint (sound like what you are describing) but my toes are still in the right place so maybe its arthritis. I will mention it to the doctor the next time I am there in a couple of weeks. It is sore most of the time. What does the podiatrist do for you to aleviate the pain? x

Podiatrist will sort out splints or wedges and can also give a steroid injection (wonderful, doesnt hurt and 2 days later you're back to normal for a few months!) I,ve had a splint which has helped. An op has been mentioned, but it means 8 weeks on crutches and i have too much going on to be bothered with that presently!

I can only say about Romania, but here sometimes bunions can be stopped from developing and hurting (at least for a while, if surgery is for some reason not an option) through physiotherapy. Might be worth asking a doctor about that.

I have pain and swelling in my big toe joints and also my smaller toes, it is there all the time but some days the balls of my foot swell as well making it so that my toes stick up in the air a bit, the rhumatologist said he could feel inflamation round the joints but didn't explain more.

I have pain in the big toe joint, and it is swollen but I dont think its bunions.I also have pain in everyother part of my foot you care to mention. like Linda I have problems with the ball of my foot, after numerous inflammations all the soft tissue has disappeared meaning it leaves the bones very close to the surface, this is agony to walk on! Just got some new orthotics to cushion the bottom of my feet which help. I would suggest you see a podiratrist as the bio mechanics of your foot may be affected. Speaking from personal experience my rheumatologist was a waste of time.

I think there is a podiatrist attached to my surgery. Mostly for the elderly but I am sure if I asked they would see me. I'll give them a call tomorrow and see how I go about getting an assessment. Thanks. x

Could the big toe pain be GOUT? The medicine used to treat gout (Colchicine) has been tested to treat PBC as well. Might be worth looking into.

Not what you're looking for?
