Turmeric can treat liver disease

Oct 31, 2010 08:03 AM By Staff Reporter

Scientists from Saint Louis University have found that a crucial chemical in Turmeric used in Asian countries to treat liver damage from a condition known as fatty liver disease.

Curcumin, a chemical in turmeric can treat the non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), the most occurring fatty liver disease.

Around 3-4 percent of the US population gets affected by NASH which could eventually damage the liver. The extreme cases could be cirrhosis, liver cancer and death.

Turmeric is used as a medicinal plant in countries such as India and China.

"My laboratory studies the molecular mechanism of liver fibrosis and is searching for natural ways to prevent and treat this liver damage," said Anping Chen, Ph.D., corresponding author and director of research in the pathology department of Saint Louis University.

NASH-led liver fibrosis is commonly associated with human patients who are obese or have type 2 diabetes. Curcumin eliminated the effects of leptin, which plays a crucial role in the development of liver fibrosis.

"While research in an animal model and human clinical trials are needed, our study suggests that curcumin may be an effective therapy to treat and prevent liver fibrosis, which is associated with non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH)," said Chen.

That's interesting👍. I've read it helps with arthritis too. But there is a caution... If one is on medication in the "blood thinners" category of any kind, be warned. Curcumin also thins the blood. Also, check with the other kinds of medications you're on. Make sure there are no drug interactions there as well. ❤ Hope others pipe in..... this is just what I've read online about curcumin.

CurcuPlex-95 60 (Tumeric) veggie capsules.

This is an excellent product. Dr Author Berkson (Dr. Burt Berkson’s son) went to India to inquire about their Tumeric, he brought back Curcuplex95, perfect combo of the extract and flower. This product is a excellent product and also “pure”, no fillers.

You can’t buy on line or in apothecaries, you will have to seek out a Clinician that carries it. Fortunately I’m a Clinicain and I can order.

Hoping you know a Clinicain that will have this product or is willing to purchase. If you aren’t able to find let me know, I will try for you.

You may go online and research who is carrying Curcuplex95 in your area.

Be careful with this information. It is for NASH affected people. My liver specialist told me to specifically STOP any Turmeric as it is harmful to the liver and he has seen patients with liver failure due to Turmeric. I am sure like anything else they probably overdid it - but always treat these types of reports with caution and discuss with your doctor.

Ive been taking Curcuplex for 2-3 yrs, no side effects. I started taking Tumeric immediately after it came in from India. Intregrative MD and Hepatologist knows every move I make, niether never mentioned dangers with Tumeric, I will discuss with them again.
