Hi Laura3174

I have been diagnosed with a vitamin B12 deficiency caused by pernicious anaemia. According to the GP I fit the profile as I am blue eyed, fair haired and over 60! It is said that once you have one auto immune condition you are more likely to suffer with another. For me it is something to do with not having an "intrinsic factor" - sounds important but not sure what it means :-)

B12 deficiency can also be caused by diet. I am not sure so please do not quote me but vegans can be B12 deficient if they are not careful about their diet.

I have copied this from the internet

"Because the nutrient is found in animal foods, like meat, fish, dairy, and eggs, vegans are more susceptible to B12 deficiency"

best wishes

Hi Laura3174.

I'm 54 and have had vitamin B12 deficiency for 20 years and have been having a B12 injection for the same amount of years. I was diagnosed with PBC last November. So in my case no 😀.

Hi Lindy marie,

Not sure how long I'very been deficient but was diagnosed with PBC last year and these are the first bloods since then. Not sure I was tested for B12 last year. Thanks for your reply.

Hi ButterflyEi,

Thanks for the info. Dr said he wasn't sure if my B12 deficiency was caused by PBC and that I should ask when next at hospital. I'll just keep taking the tablets and see what my next bloods show.

In my case the B12 deficiency is caused by Gene mutation. people with MTHFR gene mutation tend to have B12 deficiency. Regular B12 doesn't help because of inefficient methylation process. I take Methylated B12, and folate instead.

Has anyone seen a link between vitamin b12 and iron levels and pbc? Thanks
