Hi, please make sure that you are being treated for PA in accordance with the British National Formulary especially if you have neurological issues as above in mummytina's psot

This part of what it says; please note that many people find being treated in accordance with the first paragraph still does not deal with their problems, and it seems many doctors ignore the implications of the second paragraph.

"By intramuscular injection, pernicious anaemia and othe macrocytic anaemias without neurological involvement, initially 1 mg 3 times a week for 2 weeks and then 1mg every 3 months.

Pernicious anaemia and other macrocytic anaemias with neurological involvement, initially 1mg on alternate days until no further improvement, then 1mg every 2 months."

Doctors seem repeatedly to completely misinterpret the second paragraph and ignore the fact that many of their patients have neurological involvement and after the six loading doses just inject 1mg every 3 months. This is not correct, when neurological issues are present doctors should be treating according to the second paragraph quoted.

You can consult the BNF online:

bnf.org

Sign in etc as instructed then you can have about half an hour on the site; you can even print what you neeed: go to Section 9.1.2 Drugs used in megaloblastic anaemias.
