I was at a Community Blood Drive for my 9 year old granddaughter, who has Leukemia, but chose not to give blood because of the PA.

The Red Cross said I could probably donate but my iron count would have to be up to a certain level and I'm not sure where that stands right now.

I think my iron might be low because I feel really tired as the day goes on.

I'm stuggling with this and feeling a little guilty about not donating blood. What are your feelings about donating blood with PA?

Hi allstarz,

My hubby who is the only one in our family without PA gives blood,as I cannot believe getting PA blood is terribly good blood for someone allready ill. .

Kind regards,

Marre.

Anytime I've gone to donate blood (prior to diagnosis with PA) they carry out a finger prick blood collection and then test for iron levels. If there are signs of low iron they are turned away from being allowed to donate blood.

This happened to me several times, many years ago, so I gave up trying. My blood is probably in a better condition now, post diagnosis with receiving B12 injections and getting the low iron sorted, that it ever was.

I can't see why there would be a problem donating blood providing your B12 deficiency is being managed.

Hi allstarz,

I was a blood donor for 10 years until I was diagoned with P/A (although I had problems with the finger prick test every time). Once I started getting 3 monthly injections of hydroxocobalamin Blood Transfusion Service said thanks for past donations but I am no longer allowed to donate. Don't feel guilty about it. I'm sure you already give support in lots of different ways. Best Wishes to your granddaughter
