Dear all. There’s a lot of social media and write ups on solving leaky gut, route to all auto immune disease resolution. Does anyone have a view or insight in if there is any truth in this. Eg Don’t eat any grains etc? Thanks.

my understanding is that the original proponent of the idea abandoned it but it keeps getting resurrected.

Hi PAapr22

In my personal experience absolutely yes! There is truth wrapped in some myth probably and which is which … who knows?

I went from being unable to eat anything without severe bloating, abdominal pain, cramps, diorrhea and nausea and I looked dreadful. My skin, hair and nails and eyes were dull and I had no energy and I felt my life as I knew it was no more.

I stumbled through many eating approaches and nothing worked til I came across the autoimmune paleo diet (AIP) and I essentially removed lectins from my diet as well as other things and the difference was nothing short of miraculous. That was September 2023.

I no longer have any gut symptoms and can eat without pain but if I do eat lectins I suffer - I am suffering today as two days ago I ate two KFC chicken fillets - tasted good but my gut is still suffering spasms although subsiding. I make my own KFC equivalent usually and can eat with no issues but we were out and delayed and I was driving and I was very hungry so I risked it!

I hope you find a solution as having gut issues is so debilitating and I found a troublesome gut affected my mood big time.

This is a question I constantly wonder about. I don’t have any gut issues to speak of, but have Hashimoto’s and B12 deficiency. I haven’t gone gluten free or dairy free. I want to reduce my thyroid antibodies but have seen conflicting ideas about the necessity of this as well. Still researching…

I’m working on getting all my vitamins, minerals etc to optimum levels as a start and using betaine HCL to increase stomach acid - assuming it’s low.

I have been mostly gluten free for 28 years when I suspect AIG first reared its ugly head. I got my first scope in November which after going on a gluten diet for 2 months prior, came back positive for AIG, negative celiac. AIG was suspected thru PA & Partial cell antibodies.

I have had no real gut issues since going off gluten 28 years ago. On occasion I went back on gluten and gut issues would arise, so would go back off it. I will continue to be gluten free because I do feel better and I may have a sensitivity to gluten/wheat. Perhaps being gluten free means that you reduce junk food by about 90%, so perhaps it is simply having a better diet, IDK.

I have no issues with dairy or legumes and will keep on these for protein & B vitamins. We are probably all different, I will go with what I suspect is right for me.

Oh, when first in hospital with PA, my Gastroenterologist mentioned Leaky Gut/Autoimmune Gastritis as one of the same things. I haven't had a chance to talk to him since while not off my face after scope, but will ask him his theories about the condition when I next see him (September). No, he's not necessarly amazingly special figuring out my issue at first meeting because I had already tested positive for parietal cell antibodies.

From an article on Harvard Health blog

"We all have some degree of leaky gut, as this barrier is not completely impenetrable (and isn't supposed to be!). Some of us may have a genetic predisposition and may be more sensitive to changes in the digestive system, but our DNA is not the only one to blame. Modern life may actually be the main driver of gut inflammation. There is emerging evidence that the standard American diet, which is low in fiber and high in sugar and saturated fats, may initiate this process. Heavy alcohol use and stress also seem to disrupt this balance.

We already know that increased intestinal permeability plays a role in certain gastrointestinal conditions such as celiac disease, Crohn's disease, and irritable bowel syndrome. The biggest question is whether or not a leaky gut may cause problems elsewhere in the body. "

"Leaky Gut Syndrome", is not a diagnosable condition. The degree to which intestinal permeability, along with other factors, influence the development of disease, is still something being actively researched.

As explained by Dr. Alessio Fasano above, an over-active immune system and unhealthy gut microbiome are also critical factors to be considered in this process.
