Bleeding when injecting

Hi everyone, I have just done a IM in the outside upper thigh area which I always do, alternating legs I use. I have never had bleeding before until this recent injection when I can only describe as a spurt of blood which then became discoloured with the B12 appearing tinged brown. Should I be worried about this ? 🤔😧

Oh dear. Whoops, you hit a small vein which we occasionally do. You will most probably have a bruise tomorrow. Fret not. (Blood mixed with B12 and exposed to air).

Thanks Narwhal, I haven't done that before and I have been doing the IM since the 2020. I am using the Hevert 2ml and always feel anxious injecting, much prefer the 1ml but still can't buy it.

Oh I know that 2 mls is a bit of a devil. Maybe, only a suggestion see how you are on 1.5 mls. Just because we only need about 0.3 mls which would equate to 0.6 mls of Hevert.

Erm, I still mess up occasionally. I have grown up with ingrown toe nails. So, would operate with my biological father’s medical kit from aged 7. Do not ask about when mother walked in and found me piercing my own nose. 🐒

Ooh ingrowing toe nails soo painful ! Following the nose piercing sounds like you were practising to self inject 😂

I often use Pascoe Hydroxo in 1ml 1500ug but I dont all the 1ml. . . . . . Pascoe would be a favorite but it is in the dearer category. . . . . I dont understand the fascination with panpharma though. . . . . If someone can fill me in I'll read it. . . . I use as close to 1/2ml as one can judge in a syringe . . . . . I need a jab every day or second day but every day is about normal . . . . . I do not though need 1000ug per day and 1000ug or 1500ug allows me to go longer. . . . . . 500/600ug seems fine. . . . . Shake it though before opening. . . . . So using Pascoe Hydroxo 1ml 1500ug you can cut right down to 1/2ml or slightly more. . . . . Also .. . . . . When injecting you can feel yourself inject the fluid . . . . . If you feel the fluid slow down or stop for a second and then continue . . . . . I find it better to really slow down compared to pushing it in and also have not had as many bleeds where the B12 comes out along with a little blood. . . . . Only have occasionally a little spot of blood since. . . . . Just the findings of a complete amateur

That's interesting OldmanD I did feel a little resistance partway through. Thank you for that insight.

If you feel any pain after you pierce the skin back out and move a little. . . . . All I can read is telling that a 1" needle is safe on that big muscle but and there seems to be a but. . . . . . If I feel anything painful I back out and move a bit usually higher up. . . . If everything is okay but I feel the fluid as such I just go very slowly and it is those times I may, just may get a little spot but slow seems to win there . . . . . . If I dont feel the fluid enter I go for it as such, over and done . . . . . .

No need to worry ! It’s happened to me once or twice in 10 years of self injecting . It’s a bit frighening . Just pressing the spot with a swab for a minute or two then forget about it if it happens again . Best wishes .

I feel reassured knowing it'it's happened to others, it was very alarming, thank you.

You stated 'UPPER' outer thigh. You should be using the middle of the muscle, the Vastus Lateralis. The belly of the muscle is relatively free from nerves and blood vessels. Stand with your hands by your side ald let your fingers curl naturally. Not exact but a good indicator of the area.

There's a pinned post about IM injection guidelines that links to a PDF from Nursing Times. Has good diagrams showing the muscle groups.
