I have seen mention made of the ileum and of the terminal ileum. I haven't been able to discover whether these both refer to the same thing, or whether "terminal ileum" is the most distal part of the ileum. Does anyone here know?

rummaging I found a reference to the proximal ileum, which seems distinct from the terminal ileum.
I remember being taught [in the 1960s] that the 'terminal ileum' refers to the last six feet or so of the small bowel. That always seemed rather a lot to me, and I've since read that it may be the last foot or so. It seems it's the last bit of the small intestine. [It may even vary between individuals.]
