Raised bump on thigh after injecting

birdsforme profile image

I did my first injection today and had a raised bump on my thigh. I used a 30G , 1/2 inch needle. I am very thin and did not know if that was the problem. Has anyone else encountered this same problem? Any advice would be helpful. Thank you so much!

That's a subcutaneous injection .I do these.

Just needs to go in fatty tissue.

Make a smsll roll of flesh next time.

Tummy 2" away from belly button may be easier if you ate thin.

Ice the bump.

Hopefully won't happen again.

Thank you so much. That is very helpful! I think I will try my stomach the next time.

Plenty of videos on u tube.

Wash hands

Clean kitchen roll or surface

Lay everything out .

2ml syringe

B12

Alcohol swab ( not essential)

2 sized needles

Ampoule cutter ( if used)

Check expiry date of b12

Make sure the b12 ampoule is at room temperature.

All b12 at the bottom.

Snap the top of away ftom you with a tissue or snapper device.

I personally use a blue 21G needle on a 2ml syringe to withdrawer the b12 .

Tap or flick to remove bubbles.

Change needle to 30G.

Flick agsin to make sure no air bubbles. If s bead of b12 appears flick thd syringe to remove it.

Relax and get in a comfortable position.

If using your stomach

Hold a roll of flesh to inject . You don't have to hold tightly.

Avoid any visible veins.

I breath out gently as I put the needle in slowly and steadily.

Push the plungedr to put in b12 .

Slowly remove the needle.

I use a sterild alcohol wipe to just press on spot where needle withdrawn.

Take you time .

Sharps in sharp non as you go along.

Thd rest in ordinary waste.

Alternate places.

I do use my stomach.

Thighs

Above hip bones.

When first did it I was thin.

Hope all goes well.

Thank you again. I figured out that I injected into the muscle. It did go down later. I am thin but my thighs are very muscular do to years of walking, biking and hiking. You have been very helpful!

Not sure what a 30g needle is. I use a 23, which is fairly thin. I'm nearly 70 and tend to bruise at the thigh injection site (so I get a nursing friend to give me the injection in the buttock when I can). One of your responses says that it sounds as if you did not inject into the muscle, but into the fatty layer above it. I would not worry unless it gets red and hot. It should absorb over time. You are well advised below to check out youtube videos. See if you can build up some muscle in the area too. All the best!

Just do you know as far as I know its not recommended in the buttocks anymore.Sciatica nerve could be affected.

You have z good friend though to help you

27- 31 G ard fine short needles used fir subcutaneous injections . Into the fatty tissue

Diabetics use thus size for insulin.

The higher the number the finer the needle.

23G 1" long is used by the nurse when I have my IM one at the surgery inro my upper arm muscle.

Yes I did read that the buttocks was not recommended any more for injections. Thanks for all of your help!!

I inject in my butt. It doesn’t hurt and I’m only 90 pounds. A 30g needle seems thick. Maybe that’s why your skin doesn’t like it.

30G is the finest that you can get for a subcutaneous injection The higher the number, the finer the needle .

Yes, I have read all of your hints and knew the 30 G needle was very thin. Your hints on this site are so helpful and I don't know what I would have done without that knowledge. Thank you so very much!!

I use 23g and it's advised to go into muscle. I run 8 to 12 hours a week and so find into my quads the easiest. It does lump up if you don't go in deep enough, but it's ok, just not as effective. You'll get there with practice. Good luck!

If it came up quite soon after injecting you may have nicked a vein, it will go down. No need to worry.

As the others have said a needle of that size is probably really for subcutaneous. You 'could' inject it into a muscle if you're quite thin but I would just inject into your tummy.

Thank you for replying. I figured out later that I did inject into the muscle. Will try another area with a bit of fat.
