Petechiae

Hi.

Has anyone developed Petechiae (tiny red flat spots like a blood blister), since they started to SI B12?

I have been SI EOD for 4 months and the last few weeks, some of these have appeared singly, in various parts of my trunk but mainly on my lower tummy with odd ones in other areas....

Thank you. Its probably nothing to do with the B12.

Hypothyroidism can cause petechiae, so maybe get your thyroid levels checked.

StitchFairy might not have seen your reply (you replied to the thread rather than the individual reply). :-)

My mention should alert.

Hi

I've had Petechia for years and nothing to do with B12 deficiency.

Tell your doctor who should do fairly extensive blood tests and maybe refer you to a dermatologist.

Petechia can occasionally be an indicator for various conditions and requires investigation.

Mine was eventually attributed to nsaids e. G. Ibuprofen and similar drugs.

Good luck

Ah thank you. Yes I've googled it and scared myself (not always a good idea lol) and will show my gp when I see him for the blood results. I just pressed the reply button, so don't know what happened there but doing it on my phone, so perhaps hit the wrong button. Thanks so much

You may care to have a look here:

Some very unpleasant photos - be warned.

They mention von Willebrand disease which can be acquired in certain other disorders as well as being a primary disorder.

Thanks. Mine are nowhere near as bad as the photos. Just a few isolated ones but I will get them checked.

Yes, redbobbie5, I get them on my upper arms. I've found that increasing my b12 injections to every other day has decreased the occurrence. I do believe they are due to B12 depletion.

Oh thank you. I already do EOD injections and seem to do ok mainly. I'll be having some blood tests soon, so it may show up something. I read that Vit C and K deficiencies can cause this (I was prescribed Vit D by my gp but no Vit K to go with it, which I believe is important)

Good to know redbobbie5. I have started to take a multi vitamin daily that has vit c,d,& k so that probably plays as well. This has been a slow, up and down, learning process for me. Life changing event. I'm always looking for new information. And yes K is very important. Hang in there.

Yes, a learning curve for me too but everyone on here is fantastic and such a great support. I'm taking a multi vit too, so will check if it has K in it 😉. I was advised to supplement with Jarrow methyl folate, ferrous sulphate (with Vit C) and Vit D3 if levels are low, plus test every 4-6 months.. l Good luck with your journey and thank you!

I also have the spots, mostly on my tummy. Not sure if they showed up just before started treatment or just afterward.

I assumed they were a side effect of injecting, but maybe they were a sign of the deficiency.

It's hard to know but I'm getting it checked tomorrow, just as a precaution. There aren't loads and not at the site of injections.
