No . It’s nothing to do with B12 deficiency . But untreated B12 deficiency can lead to a patient to be somewhat incoherent , struggling to think of the correct words to express themselves .

The trouble is I have all the symptoms (neuropathy, fatigue, brain fog, etc) and now some difficulty with speech, as well as a blood film to show I have vitamin B12 deficiency. , I believe it is all due to my taking, since the mid 1990s, omeprazole for a troublesome hiatus hernia. Because the serum B12 has been in the normal range, it was thought that the neuropathy could not be due to B 12 deficiency.

Just over two years ago my blood film was repeated and the typical picture of vit B12 deficiency was seen. I was started on vitamin B12 supplement . The result, despite a great rise in serum B12 , was an expected deterioration in symptoms and the development of new symptoms. As anticipated, improvement in my long term condition has not yet begun .

In the last year or so I developed a slurred voice and occasionally difficulty in getting my tongue around polysyllabic words. I refer to this as a dysarthria.

I have googled vitamin B12 deficiency and slurred voice and got a number of hits. I also seem to recall that people have reported similar experiences during treatment for long term B12 deficiency. I have had difficulty in tracing these. Perhaps I am in error. Have other people had a similar experience during treatment with vit. B12?

At my worst I did have partial paralysis of my mouth and throat. I can remember wondering if I had "wooden tongue" (an Actinobacillus infection, in a way like tetanus, that affects cattle) as I had trouble moving my tongue and therefore swallowing and talking. Combined with a peripherally split tongue and constant mouth ulcers, as I was in so much pain, I was very reluctant to speak at all (unlike me!).

I also developed nominal dysphasia so couldn't find the right words for anything so pretty much gave up talking for about 18 months.

I don't remember that much about it because I lost almost all my memory - both input and recall - during the time when it was bad. I know I used to text people rather than talk - even if I was with them at times - so obviously the ability to vocalise must have been slightly worse than the ability to find the words - although I know that alone was total torture.

It took about 3 years of daily SI with high strength B12 to get back to being able to speak fluently again.

A further 3 years on and I don't even think about it a lot of the time.

Unfortunately, even though it can raise serum levels, oral B12 is not a solution to the problem in some cases of B12 deficiency and the only "cure" is frequent injections for life.

I suggest you go back to your Dr and press for at least every other day injections until your neuro symptoms are resolved.

At least once you have had some jabs from your Dr to ascertain that you won't get any (extremely rare) adverse reaction to the jabs, you can look up Wedgewood's posts and replies by going to her profile, by double clicking on her name and looking under the heading "replies" as well as "posts", for information on sourcing B12 ampoules from Germany and do your own SI.

Dysarthria it’s typically caused by neurological damage, so I don’t see why it couldn’t be caused by a B 12 deficiency. I have paralysis of my left vocal fold from B 12 deficiency leading to speech problems as well.

I definitely had speech problems and swallowing problems and often choked on saliva when speaking. Embarrassing! Also lots of lost words, names, etc. Almost completely resolved now, hooray!
