If the tests for IFA are so unreliable, how are we to know if we are suffering from PA or just B12 deficiency? I have a negative result but have spent years NOT getting better on supplements.

It's never 'just a 12 deficiency'Did you also have b12 levels tested.?
Other blood tests?
There's been alot of posts recently on this.
If levels are normal but symptoms
Could be a functional b12 deficiency
If levels low and your diet good and you've tried b12tablets and nothing ekses found ot must be an absorption problem.
Then injections for life
Have tge doctors given a reason??
Have they they ruled out other conditions?

Dragonwalker. I've just left a couple of replies in the post below yours and also posted two links to information and the BSH treatment and diagnostic guidelines for B12 and folate deficiencies.
Here's a link to the relevant post:

The information they should help you (sorry to do it like this but I haven’t sufficient time right now to write and individual reply for you).
If you have the symptoms of B12 deficiency or a proven low B12 result and are not getting better on oral tablets, it’s likely that you have an absorption problem, thus are unable to absorb the B12 from tablets, and therefore need vitamin B12 injections.
It’s also possible that you have an underlying condition that may be causing your health issue (common conditions that cause similar symptoms include diabetes, hypothyroidism, autoimmune conditions etc).
I hope that your GP has explored things appropriately, but it sounds unlikely!
Have a trawl through the guidelines and if you have more questions or need further advice, please put up a new post.
Good luck.
