Not being out in the sun enough, especially if you live in a northern state.

Here in the UK we are advised to take Vitamin D supplements throughout fall and winter - and all the time during lockdown.

I'm on a continuous maintenance doses . Do have regular blood tests .Even then I'm slightly below range last time?

Vitamin D to be absorbed by body, you will need to have fat along with Vitamin D rich food. Fat is very important for Absorption of Vitamin D, through gut.

Interestingly a small study has suggested that too much fat eaten while taking vit D supplement can inhibit its absorption. I personally don’t take my vit D with a meal since you will absorb around 70% of it without fat in any case and I don’t want the faff of controlling the fat in my meal.

Hi Honey - whilst lack of sun is a huge factor in low vitamin D production I have also read that your body's ability to convert the sun's rays into vitamin D diminishes as you age so a supplement is a good idea *especially* in the winter months. I hear that D3 combined with K2 (MK7) is the best form of Vitamin D to take.

You mention a thyroid problem. Do you have Hashimotos ? If so that can affect the uptake of nutrients from food- B12 - Folate - Ferritin - VitD. How much levo/T4 are you taking ? I notice in another post you have acid reflux which can also be connected to low thyroid. There is a Thyroid Forum here on HU - maybe take a look for more info. Happy to help.

They say I have overactive thyroid so they never diagnosed me with hashimotos are nth

Marz in reply to Honey1978

If you are taking Levo/T4 you are HypOthyroid not HypER. In the early stages of Hashimotos you can have results that suggest both. Do you obtain copies of your test results ? You can then monitor your own progress and check what has been missed.

How do you take your Levo/T4 ? Iron ? VitD ? What are you taking and how much ? Taking Iron too close to thyroid hormones can block uptake/absorption.

Marz in reply to Honey1978

How much VitD are you taking ? Docs often prescribe too little ! What was your last result ? Do you obtain your results from GP ?

Marz profile image
Marz in reply to Honey1978

So is that once a week or once a month ? How long have you been on this dose ? Have you been re-tested ?

Honey1978 profile image
Honey1978 in reply to Marz

Yes been retested once a week

Marz profile image
Marz in reply to Honey1978

Not heard of weekly testing before. So what was your last result ?

Honey1978 profile image
Honey1978 in reply to Marz

No I take vitamin d every week lol but my last test vitamin d was 18 so I guess it has to be 30

If the measurement is ng/L your level is good around 60. If the measurement is pmol/L your level is good around 100. Magnesium and VitK2-MK7 are important co-factors when taking VitD.

What Marx is saying is good. If you have thyroid problems, low or high, u must learn about it. It’s a very complex organ and can affect a lot of other things.

I had Hashimoto, now have no thyroid at all, not since 1986.

It’s almost better to have none than Hashimoto which goes up and down like a yo-yo.
