3 Days Post Loading Injections - Symptoms are stirring up!!!

I had 7 daily injections (loading doses) and had the last one on Monday. Today, I noticed that the fatigue was not nearly as bad and I was able to take a pretty lengthy walk (in comparison to having to work hard to go 4 driveways .... ). I also noticed that the brain fog was definitely improved!! BUT all of a sudden I am having strong foot pain in both feet (it came and went prior to diagnosis), a stabbing pain in each outer hip/buttcheek area (tee hee hee) and my pinkie and wind fingers in each hand are cold and tingling. Both sides exactly the same for all symptoms which I am hoping this is the “stirring” up the nerves and maybe there is some healing going on? I am really desperate to know if anyone has had similar occurrences like these? Oh my gosh and both sets of toes just went numb as I type this!! Thanks all.

This is normal from what I know. My symptoms were more intense post loading injections. I even had new ones including stiffness in my pinky and ring fingers and my hands. My hands feel like I had arthritis. I'm 11 weeks post loading and I still have these symptoms although they are getting significantly better. But it takes a long time for nerves to repair, likely months.

My neurologist said this is normal as it is the nerves healing.. He said it will take months and there will be ups and downs. I can attest to this personally.

You're in for a rollercoaster ride.. :)

Also, another but of advice. Keep the Injections going. You should be doing 2X injections weekly or something like this for now. I'm sure your doctor will want to stop, but I personally wouldn't recommend it. The additional injections can help keep the symptoms at bay at you heal. (At least they do for me)

Can you overdose or have too much b12 from injections? It makes me think there is a reason they are prescribed rather that over the counter.

No. You can't. That is one of the misconceptions about B12. It's widely agreed upon and established by the medical community that you cannot overdose. You can Google that and people here can send the "misconceptions" link that explains this.

The reason it is prescribed is because in the USA all injections require prescriptions.

Exactly the reason that Seth12345 states .All injectables are prescription only in UK and USA . (That obviously makes sense where a drug is dangerous , but B12 is not ). But , for for me , it’s a life-saver that I can get b12 ampoules from reliable , controlled , online pharmacies in Germany ,where it is an OTC item . Here at the Pernicious Anaemia Society , we are campaigning to have injectable B12 made OTC . It has been proven that you can’t overdose on it . It is not toxic , though we hear misinformed doctors say that it is , if we ask for extra injections when symptoms return before the next prescribed injection . Pernicious Anaemia is badly understood unfortunately. We are all different , and symptoms can vary widely . And we all need different amounts of injections . That’s why many members of our society are forced to self -inject , to keep symptoms at bay , as here in the U.K. , doctors will only prescribe an injection every 2 or 3 months . That is pretty rigid . One hears of exceptions , but not often .

So , be as patient as possible . You will succeed . It’s quite common to feel worse while you are in fact getting better ! All the best to you .

Just to boringly repeat that injectable B12 (as in ampoules) is only illegal in the UK if supplied to treat Pernicious Anaemia (or whatever precise form of B12 deficiency). It appears legal for beauty treatments...

Yes , but how do I get a prescription for it to make me more beautiful? I think the beauty treatment industry charges about £80.00 a shot ..... Any how I should be devastatingly beautiful as I inject once a week ( but I’m not 💉!)

My go prescribed a box of ampules you me to take to the nurse for my injections every three months though I have had to miss two due to COVID-19 and the surgery being closed and hopefully getting one done tomorrow

Can we help support the Campaign to self inject B12?

Yes. Its like snakes and ladders.

I managed to get a good frequency of b12 injections from Gp

Not easy. Once I reduced them to 2 weekly I've not been allowed ti increase them. I've tried 2 weekly for a year. Tecently decide tk uo them again. So do them weekly sc and a IM monthly .

Goes can prescribe more if they choose to.

Hi Hope,

What you are going through is completely normal. Everyone's experience plays out differently but it is not uncommon to pick up new symptoms or have symptoms intensify, as you are healing.

Here is a good read about the ins and outs of a b12 deficiency. It contains some comforting words about the safety of b12 -

Yes mine did that also. Pins and needles and numbness coming and going. I’ve been told it’s nerves waking up. It goes eventually.
