I am obliged to use Omeprazole to stop anti arthritic drugs from burning my stomach out. I’ve experienced no difficulties x

I’ve never taken take a PPI( Proton Pump Inhibitor ) because as a Pernicious Anaemia patient I have low/no stomach acid . All I can say about it is that I knew someone who took it for over 15 years , and ended up with totally numb feet because of B12 deficiency . Doctors had no knowledge of this , and she had two operations on her spine which did not help. The feet remain numb as this cannot be reversed after such a long time .

Its OK to take it for a few months , but afterwards it will have a detrimental effect because you need your stomach acid to aid the breakdown of food in order to absorb vitamins and minerals . Especially for vitamin B12 which is the most difficult vitamin to absorb .

Acid reflux can be caused by low stomach acid , because the oesophageal sphincter fails to close sufficiently tightly when the stomach acid is too weak to send the necessary signals of impending approach of acid .

But if you are receiving adequate injection- treatment for P.A. , you will at least be receiving enough B12 . Best wishes .

Hi, I was prescribed the same, but I would not take it because of it lowering stomach acid. If you have PA, then to my understanding, you already have low stomach acid. so it didn't make sense. And my GP could not explain why.

A long time ago a doctor reassured me there were different kinds of acid other than hydrochloride acid. Not sure if that makes sense now !?

to clarify - if you are having injections for PA then the effect of PPIs on B12 absorption in the gut is irrelevant.
