Are you injecting methylcobalamin? If so, switch to cyanocobalamin or hydroxocobalamin. Several people have reported unpleasant effects, including anxiety, with methylcobalamin.

I’m injecting hydroxocobalamin and cynacobalamin...should I be taking folate as my folate is v high without supplement?

I had that happen to me once but it went away. Now I inject every other day, sometimes more, with preservative-free methylcobalamin and haven't had any more anxiety. I hope the same for you.

Dealing with anxiety is not easy. I always try to focus on my breathing. Long slow breaths in and out and that tends to help after a while. Hope it gets better.

You should be getting less anxiety on b12. Make sure you are getting enough folic acid (5mg per day) and potassium. Potassium is particularly important when you first start injecting. East food high in potassium or possibly a supplement. Make sure you’re eating nutritious meals before injecting. It might get better - if you’ve only just started your body can be adjusting.

DO NOT TAKE 5mg OF FOLIC ACID A DAY.

It is unnecessary and potentially dangerous.

Is folic acid the same as folate? And what should you be taking with B12 injections? What is the definitive protocol?

Folic acid is one of the many forms of folate.

Having B12 injections does not increase the amount of folate you need.

400 mcg a day should be enough for everybody.

A very few people may find that methylfolate works better than folic acid.

Imogenta...for clarification...we do not advise that anyone takes potassium supplements unless under direct medical supervision.

Potassium is very finely balanced in the body and taking oral supplements of potassium if not needed can cause cardiac arrest (which is why a GP never prescribes potassium tablets unless potassium levels have been tested first, and then, the first line of treatment is to increase potassium in the diet.

Oral or IV pitassium supplements are only given under mid cal supervision and then only for the most severe cases of deficiency (if potassium levels are lower that 2mmol/L.

Please also note fbirder 's responses: research now indicates that 5mg folic acid (or high doses of any folate) may be potentially harmful when taken long-term. So, 5mg folic acid should, only be taken in cases of proven deficiency, under medical supervision, and only until the original deficiency has been rectified (usually about 3-4 months). (Unless there is another medical reason for taking it (i.e. if taking medications that impede the absorption of folic acid).

I suffered with anxiety for years - unrelated to B12. I found that yoga, belly breathing and mindfulness helped me. I also read a lot of self-help books to understand it. Try reading Self Help for Your Nerves by Clare Weekes. It’s a bit dated as it was written a long time ago but a lot of people have found it helpful. I also read one that used CBT techniques for anxiety but can’t remember the title. CBT techniques could be useful. At least you know what is causing your anxiety which is a bit different to when it just occurs without an obvious reason.

Could you please tell me how much of magnesium an B vitamins do you take?

I know that we are all different and it is not my intention to copy you. Just to get an idea.

Olga67. Please be aware that vitamin and mineral supplementation is unique to each individual and there is no such thing as a 'one-size-fits-all' regime.

In particular...not everyone needs to take a B vitamin complex...B6, in particular, can cause neurological symptoms and potential long term damage, if your body doesn't need it.

If you can, it would be a good idea to get a vitamin and mineral screen done so that you can assess what your body needs (or not) and then supplement accordingly - preferably with the advice and support of a medical professional (though I know how tricky this can be).

I have had it for several years and the doctor just gave me buspar but that doesn't work all of the time. I tried to get Valium but he said it's to addicting but I took it 25 years ago and had no problem stopping it.. I don't know if it's a b12 issue or not but my blood work always comes back as somewhat anemic

This is just what works for me but I meditate in the morning and if it starts to hit during the day, I take valerian. My anxiety pops up around that time of the month or when I’m super stressed. The valerian helps a lot.
