Hi,

Has anyone brought 5mg Folic Acid from Amazon? I’m supposed to take 5mg a day for three months but my doctor only gave me a months supply. Its prescription only but I’ve found it sold on amazon....

Thank you in advance!

I would contact tour doctor. They can send an electronic prescription to your pharmacy.

Yes I always buy from Amazon and it’s cheaper than on prescription if your doctor gives you only a month at a time!

Good Luck

Hi

The ones I buy are called LINDENS in a green and white packet.

They may have been bought from ebay or amazon.

Hope that helps.

I find Lindens a very reputable make, I get all my vitamins and supplements from them.

I buy Jarrow MethylFolate (400 mg or mcg?) from Amazon, delivered automatically each month. Very cheap, good quality.

Yes I always buy my supplements from them because they are cheaper and my insurance doesn't pay for supplements

i deal with same problem..... I need to EAT more greens.

i buy from amazon & puritans pride

1. understand what it is, what it does and where to get it naturally,

2. know what you are eating.

3. the Doctor has a degree that says Practicing Medicine... so Do your own research...LOL

B12 and folate (also known as folic acid or vitamin B9) are nutrients that cannot be produced in the body and must be... ... They are required to make normal red blood cells (RBCs), repair tissues and cells, synthesize DNA (the genetic material in cells

Folic acid and folate are both terms for a type of B vitamin (vitamin B9). Folate is a B vitamin that occurs naturally in foods such as green leafy vegetables, citrus fruit, and beans. Folic acid is man-made (synthetic) folate. It is found in supplements and added to fortified foods.

Vitamin B9 is an essential nutrient that naturally occurs as folate.

It serves many important functions in your body. For example, it plays a crucial role in cell growth and the formation of DNA.

Low levels of vitamin B9 are associated with an increased risk of several health conditions,

Folate is the naturally occurring form of vitamin B9.

Its name is derived from the Latin word "folium," which means leaf. In fact, leafy vegetables are among the best dietary sources of folate.

Folate is a generic name for a group of related compounds with similar nutritional properties.

The active form of vitamin B9 is a folate known as levomefolic acid or 5-methyltetrahydrofolate (5-MTHF).

In your digestive system, most dietary folate is converted into 5-MTHF before entering your bloodstream (6Trusted Source).

Folic acid is a synthetic form of vitamin B9, also known as pteroylmonoglutamic acid.

It’s used in supplements and added to processed food products, such as flour and breakfast cereals.

Unlike folate, not all of the folic acid you consume is converted into the active form of vitamin B9 — 5-MTHF — in your digestive system. Instead, it needs to be converted in your liver or other tissues (5Trusted Source, 6Trusted Source).

Yet, this process is slow and inefficient in some people. After taking a folic acid supplement, it takes time for your body to convert all of it to 5-MTHF (7Trusted Source).

Even a small dose, such as 200–400 mcg per day, may not be completely metabolized until the next dose is taken. This problem may become worse when fortified foods are eaten along with folic acid supplements (8Trusted Source, 9Trusted Source).

As a result, unmetabolized folic acid is commonly detected in people's bloodstreams, even in the fasted state

Snowbird1234. Just curious as to what the references '5TrustedSource' etc., refer?

Its not easy to check or understand a 'Trusted Source' unless being aware of what exactly that is 😉.

If it’s the case that some or any of the text above is copied and pasted from a website or research paper, it's necessary to indicate this and quote the sources. It's also the usual convention to indicate when quoting from elsewhere by enclosing in quotation marks or (better still) italicising any words, phrases, sentences or paragraphs that are not directly your own. (It's necessary for forum members to understand when you are expressing your own opinions...or posting opinions or information from elsewhere').

It’s also worth being aware that 'lifting' text from research papers or websites may constitute plagiarism (unless the source is fully referenced or appropriate permissions have been given).

Also worth noting that there are many websites that publish quite a lot of nonsense about all things B12, MTHFR, folate...et al - one reason why indicating sources and referencing is appropriate (rather than a direct copy and paste)...so folks here can go to the source to assure themselves of 'appropriateness' of any research that underpins the material provided (websites that don't append research papers to their discussions are ones to be avoided).

👍

5-MTHF is not the active form. There are several active forms.

Folic acid is easily converted to the other forms of folate. If the body has more of those types of folate than it needs then it might not bother converting folic acid pointlessly. That's when high dose folic acid supplements can lead to high serum levels of unconverted folic acid. If you don't take stupidly high doses then you won't get a buildup of folic acid.
