There are several causes of an inflamed stomach lining (gastritis). Some of them (too much stomach acid, overuse of NSAID painkillers) eat away at (erode) the stomach lining. You don't have that.
One cause of gastritis is called Autoimmune Metaplastic Gastric Atrophy (AMGA). AMGA results when the immune system attacks some of the cells in the stomach wall (Gastric Parietal Cells - GPCs) causing gastric atrophy (gastritis). These cells are replaced by other types of cells - this is called metaplasia and can be seen by examining the cells under a microscope. That's what they'll do with your biopsy samples.
The GPCs have two main jobs - making stomach acid and making a protein called Intrinsic Factor (IF). IF is important because the molecules of Vitamin B12 are too large to get across the gut wall on their own. IF carries them out of the gut and into the blood. If your GPCs are being killed off then you don't make IF and you don't absorb B12, so you become deficient. You have Pernicious Anaemia.
