My daughter is currently having treatment for B12 deficiency and she is about to start her third week.
As an impatient parent I keep asking her for feed back to see if there are any changes in the important issues, like better concentration in her studies changes in anxiety etc...
This morning she let me know the first improvement she has noticed.
She is now able to get a sun tan.
No not “Dad I’m feeling much better” or “I’ve just caught up with all my missed work “ but a bloody sun tan.
She is blond and very fair skinned with virtually translucent skin. Never been able to tan just burn. Now she has a tan from yesterday. So now she is in the back garden, music playing sun bathing in a bikini. Suppose better than stuck in her bedroom.
I know deficiency can cause pale skin but the difference is quite dramatic since treatment.
I’m just checking if this should be of any concern to us or is this normal?

I wouldn’t say I noticed tanning necessarily but definitely a change of skin tone. I became very yellow and this was one of the first things to improve. I have a similar complexion, pale and fair.
Did your daughter write a symptom diary? Perhaps it could be something for her to compare to whilst she is having treatment?
It’s likely your daughter may still have bad days with regards to work. Patience is key, as is recognising the bad days and completing work on good days.
I found out about my deficiency the year I was studying an access course to go to university as a mature student. I can relate to the difficulty of constructing sentences some days even for written work!
Hi! I have just recently been diagnosed with B12 deficiency, I’ve had my six loading doses and I’m due my first ‘3 month’ one tomorrow.
When I was younger I used to have beautiful olive toned skin and everyone used to be jealous but as I got older I became more and more pale (unknown to me that I was B12 deficient) now I have started treatment I am slowly seeing a difference in my skin tone! I’ve just come back from holiday with a beautiful tan! I’m just as happy as your daughter seems to be!
hi there, for years, after i got older, i thought my face was a different color than the rest of my body due to using makeup that contained sunscreen. that was not it. the day after my 6th weekly injection (im in the US) i went to wash my face in the morning and my face was magically, suddenly, the color of the rest of my body!!! i had not tanned to achieve this.
since then, i have received numerous injections and now tan to as dark, if not darker than ever.
best of luck and health for your daughter. and do please keep us updated on these humerous insights. we do so need the improvement stories to brighten our days.
