The IF result is negative. Your doctor may take that as a sign that you don't have PA. However, about half of people with PA give a negative result. So don't let the doc rule out PA based on that test.
Hi Justified do you have any neurological symptoms associated with P.A?
clivealive Oh yes, I have so many. Numbness in some toes, tingling hot or ice cold freezing hands & feet, staggering, tinnitus (nerve damage according to ENT specialist), exhaustion/insomnia/night sweats, bladder weakness but not incontinence, (has improved immensely since my B12 injections starting in May.(I'm 67) to name but a few. I even have strange stiffness/pain in my left thigh muscle which can make walking difficult and general heaviness( like trying to lift lead wellies) in leg muscles when walking which doctors aren't even interested in but I know it's not right. I don't know if that is connected. My memory was getting really bad but has improved somewhat. Some of these are a bit better since my course of injections but start to come back after 3 weeks. I have 2 cousins with PA .Thanks for getting in touch
Ideally you should be receiving more frequent injections as the BNF guidelines say below of treatment with Hydroxocobalamin:-
By intramuscular injection, pernicious anaemia and other macrocytic anaemias without neurological involvement, initially 1 mg 3 times a week for 2 weeks then 1 mg every 3 months
Pernicious anaemia and other macrocytic anaemias with neurological involvement, initially 1 mg on alternate days until no further improvement, then 1 mg every 2 months.
I'm not a medically qualified person but I think that is the regime your doctor should be prescribing for you.
Goodnight and I wish you well.
