Hi daveD,

Your MCH and MCV appear to be within range. I was very symptomatic for B12 deficiency with multiple neurological symptoms with similar results to these.

It is very difficult to convince medics that you can be B12 deficient with results within normal range. It has sadly taken me many years to get to the point that they think B12 deficiency may be part of my problems. I had to resort to self treatment but only as a very last resort.

Some people get copies of their whole set of medical records from their GP surgery ....costs about £50, possibly more. Some people on this forum have found out that they were diagnosed with PA and never told. I get copies of all my blood tests as i find it useful to track changes in results

Have you ever had a Coeliac test? It is possible to have Coeliac disease even if test is negative. As Coeliac disease can affect the gut it can cause problems with the absorption of some nutrients eg B12

Are you on other medication? Some medicines can affect the uptake of B12 and folate in the blood.

I have read that as people get older sometimes the acidity of their stomach changes.

I am not a medic just a person who has struggled to get a diagnosis.

Good luck with getting the help you need.

Afternoon Sleepybunny. you are spot with your last post, I  have had cameras top & bottom, bottom one done by a by a learner driver very painfull + CT scan. I am on lansoprazole for acid, this is what is making me think of absorption problems. I have all so gone Gluten free which I find has helped. MY worry is that some of my symptoms will be permanent . I feel that self mediation is my next step forward.  I will scroll through some of your links later. Thank you for taking the time to post all the links. Best Wishes and stay well. Dave.

"lansoprazole for acid"

lansoprazole is a PPI drug and they have been associated with causing b12 deficiency

I have read that the symptoms of low stomach acid are very similar to those of high stomach acid. Sometimes people get diagnosed with high stomach acid when actually they have low stomach acid. Has your Gp diagnosed high stomach acid?

Link to old HU thread about stomach acid which may have some useful info.

I still have some home made Sauerkraut  in the fridge when I tried the low Acid diet with out any  luck, so back on tablets. like yourself  it is down to trial & error, and like many others the best info comes from folk like your self. All symptoms now point B12+ a good B complex. I Feel I have nothing to lose. Thanks.Dave

Hi Dave - I was on cimetidine / lansoprazole / omeprazole for the best part of 25 years until someone suggested my problem may be low stomach acid.  I did the stomach acid test and found out they were right.  It's sometimes tough to tell the difference between low and high as the symptoms are so similar but well worth pursuing if the test shows low acid.
