Try not to worry too much - I know that's difficult when you get unexpected pain.Does the pain radiate down your leg at all? It may be a pinched nerve in your lower back. Best thing to do is speak to your GP. Our bodies are mysterious machines. Hope this helps.
Sorry to hear your situation it seems like my situation 30 years ago and my sons current situation. Pain changing sides is common as are changes in pain intensity. My first stop would be a good physio and learn to look after your back. When the pains bad prescription pain killers can help (get advice from your gp) also try TENS machines are cheap and work for me, my wife and my son. When the pain reduces look at doing back exercise and when feeling good make sure you get good core strength (planks pilates is good). With care you will be fine.
