Migraine with Aura

I've suffered from migraines with aura since I was at secondary school, through college and uni into my early 30's. When I was at school I took a drug (Don't know the name of it but it used to make me fall asleep at my desk.) But They worked.

I'm now 45 and 2 years ago migraines with aura have become back and are more frequent. First of all I was on Naratriptan when I got the symptoms with 10mg propranolol 3 times a day. Then 40mg 3 times a day with no triptans.

Now I take 160mg of propranolol modified release for hypertension and have recently moved onto sumatriptan but my migraines with aura have increased over the the last year. They were so dissabling without the sumatriptan and I was in a dark room each time for 3 days at a time. Now I'm on the sumatriptan (been on it a month now) usually at the aura stage I take 50mg then if it returns or the pain starts I take another one. Up to 6 in 24 hours.

The aura stage still scares me and sometimes I also get vertigo and feel really sick so take metocopramide 1 tablet 3 times a day which control the nausea and sickness.

However since I've started sumatriptan my migraines either go away or I'm not as ill for 2 days instead of the old 3 days.

Anyone else experience similar or find that naratriptan with propranolol don't work. But sumatriptan with a modified release propranolol do work to some extent? I usually get 3-4 migraines with aura a month!

Worth approaching a chiropractor and Alexander Teacher. Migraine headaches can be caused by poor head alignment and by poor muscle coordination. If this is the situation for you then all the medication will do is dull the pain but will not re-coordinate muscles. You need to see hands on specialists for this to teach you better muscle coordination.

Thanks for that. All my Dr does is refer me to neurologists. However, not on this occasion because when I was poorly in hospital last September I had 2 CT scans of the head to outrule pathology.

Never thought of approaching a chiropractor and I have got 6 prolapsed discs in my spine, with nerve root abutment of both L5-S1 nerve roots. Never thought about my C-spine. Will definitely approach. Thanks
