Anyone know if the GABA in supplements - e.g. 500 mg is the same as GABA in pregabalin - 50 mg?

GABA is a neurotransmitter that acts as a natural 'nerve-calming' agent. It helps keep the nerve activity in the brain in balance. Gabapentin appears to increase production of GABA. Glutamate is a neurotransmitter that acts as a natural 'nerve-exciting' agent.

Thanks, would it be ok for me to take 500mg GABA (recommended to help with sleep) as well as 50 mg pregabalin? Is it a case of "try it and see" - don't mind as long as it safe!

Who recommended both? If your GP then fine. but otherwise always safe to check with him or your pharmacist

I have never heard of anyone taking both as they do the same thing one is just a slightly newer form and is tolerated in a different way

I couldn’t take Gabapentin but I can take Pregablin (alongside Nortriptyline)

Definitely ask your doctor before doing this and I suspect he will merely “up” your pregablin.

Thanks, if both do the same thing i will probably try the supplement (temporarily stop pregabalin) but will check with dr. and yes I have been advised -by neurologist to ask for pregabalin dose to be upped as ness.

Never stop taking Gabapentin suddenly. You have to come off it very slowly. Side effects of withdrawal are horrible at best

Thanks for advice, I was on it before and did stop suddenly....no withdrawal effects but perhaps that was just me - though I have spoke with others who also had no withdrawal symptoms , maybe because of being on low dose!

I was switched in one go from gabapentin to pregabalin due to eyesight problems experienced on gabapentin. I went from 1200mg gabapentin to 400mg pregabalin. The pain specialist explained that pregabalin is about 3x stronger than gabapentin which is why you take a seemingly lot lower dose in mg.

Thanks, I thought gabapentin was the stronger. I'm on 50 mg pregabalin but if ness. I think dr. can raise. I'm trying to be patient and give the med a chance to work!

My mum broke her hip on her first night on Lyrica. Side effects are the worst I have encountered. My head would flop onto my keyboard or plate. I persevered and I am glad I did. Been on it 12 years now. The weight gain is not nice.

Thanks for telling me that you persevered with Lyrica, this is my second try, gave up first time because of side effects, but the general advice seems to be "PERSEVERE" and it will get better . (also from dr.)

Dear Foxglove

Lyrica and Tramadol or some other strong pain med works best on neuropathic pain. Six years ago I was weaned off Oxycontin and Oxynorm onto Tramadol and a drug called Rivitril. The Rivitril in combination with the Lyrica and Tramadol (short acting 100 x 2 daily and long acting 300 daily) is great. I feel your pain. Good Luck.

If your taking that drug for nerve pain and it's not helping much, ask your doctor for ketamine lozenges. They have to be made in the pharmacy so you may need to go to a small one because CVS wouldn't do it. Just one 5mg lozenge a day stopped the most horrible pain I could ever imagine. Now I am beginning to actually live again. For over 2 years I've been stuck at home unable to get around and I have been suffering so bad that several months ago I believed I was dying. Nerve pain in some of my organs was so bad I spent 6 weeks screaming in pain and throwing up anything at all I swallowed. Because nerve pain was causing very violent stomach pain which caused extreme vomiting. I'd lost 30 pound in that 8 weeks. Opiates and everything else was useless for years nothing helped nail I learned about ketamine. They don't want us to know how good it is for severe pain because it's a cheap easy to manufacture drug and they could loose vast sums of money from people buying less opiates. I've cut out ER pain meds and am now only taking the IR and the ER are the very expensive pain drugs. I'm having fantastic relief with now I'm on 10mg daily ketamine lozenge and now I'd say 95% of my nerve pain has stopped. It is having no adverse effects at all, but not everyone can take it. I believe this drug could relieve millions of their pain.

Hi, very interested in your success with Ketamine lozenges, may I ask if you are in the USA? ( I'm in the UK & not heard of these)I'm on Gabapentin & Oramorph, Paracetamol & they do not get rid/ease my pain. So pleased to hear about your pain relief.
