Hello speedy 72,

In all clinical trials lasting 14 weeks - 9% of those taking pregabalin experienced weight gain. 2% taking placebo also experienced weight gain.

Like all drugs there are side effects. If the gains you get from taking these out way the weight gain then take them! But do check with your GP or pain clinic. Weight gain for CP sufferers is a huge problem due to mostly being inactive and exercise is hard.

Hope this helps.

Hello there Speedy( great name)

I have been on pregabalin for a good number of years now maybe 7 years !

My weight increased but I just thought it was comfort eating and lack of mobility which it was but medications don't help .

I think pregabalin didn't help as I was on 300mg bd

I wish I had weighed myself and done something about it at the time when it was 7 lbs extra or stone extra. I was also put on cymbalta ( duloxetine 120mg) more recently well 4 years ish and had bizarre food cravings. For example I would only eat chocolate weetabix for about 6 months then more recently it was yogurt and rice pudding only. So after letting my weight get totally out of hand but still not being aware it was out of hand and ignoring my weight completely I had no choice but to tackle the HUGE ISSUE ! I with the help of my wonderful pain consultant reduced the dosage of pregabalin so it was at it most effective without as many side effects so now take 150 mg in morning and 225 mg at night and it really does help my pain no way I could do without it , also my pain dr told me that pregabalin does not affect the liver like other drugs can . My cymbalta has also been reduced to 60 mg at night now. In November last year with my best friends help we tackled the weight thing it's now June and I have lost 3 stone 5 lbs so far! It's been hard but I wish I had tackled it like I say before. The fact that you are making this post means you more aware than I ever use to be I so wish I had done something then. So after this long story I say do something before the weight becomes a problem be aware of it and don't let it get out of hand. Hope this has helped and good luck best wishes squeak xx

Has the weight loss helped with your pain issues at all?

I've been on the same for a good few years, I think my weight gain is due to lack of exercise at the moment! Lol having my op soon so that will change again for a few months :-) I didn't gain wright when I was taking it and exercising xx

No unfortunately the weight loss has nt helped with pain issues still have a lot to lose I really did let myself go! But eventually I'm sure weight loss has got to be a good thing. One off my diseases the pain is triggered by food especially healthy food and stress and fibromyalgia is the other big illness which seems to get worse all the time. However I do feel better in myself and determined to keep losing until I'm 95 kg fingers crossed . Have you found that you have put weight on ? And do you find pregabalin helps ?

Hello

These medications should not increase your weight they are there to calm down nerve pain. They are an antidepressant with contraindications that benefit nerve pain. You may put on weight when taking steroid medications. Generally if you are also not getting around and you are sitting around you will not burn off your calories so you could need to reduce food intake because of it

Pregabalin also known as Lyrica is not an antidepressant.

Lyrica (pregabalin) is an anti-epileptic drug, also called an anticonvulsant. It works by slowing down impulses in the brain that cause seizures. Lyrica also affects chemicals in the brain that send pain signals across the nervous system.

Yes they do I refused to take them for that reason. Weight gain from plain meds should not be a poisitve in pain management to me if you can weight from a drug is the drug right for trement? Overweight is a unhealthy as well.

Hi

I think you are asking the wrong question.

The question should be does this medication affect how much I notice what I eat?

It can be very easy to eat 4 slices of toast and not notice that you have eaten 4 slices of toast.

It is possible to run into a sugar deficit in the brain even though the sugar in the blood in the finger is okay. The sugar deficit in the brain because of the extra calories it burning in pain control can create havoc with a reasonable diet. Low blood sugar in the brain demands a fresh intake of food even though we do not need it.

It is something I have spotted living with pain and not taking pain killers.

I have found that chewing gum in the evenings is a great help to stop comfort eating (which is when I tend to snack). You get the lovely chewing sensation which can go on for a couple of hours without gaining weight! Just a thought!

I too take the same tablets / dose i have been on them 3 years now and I have put on weight . I feel they make me more hungry , another side effect is that I have found I get more colds ,viruses and have even got a nail infection too now . Although these side effects are not good I feel it's the less of two evils as without them the nerve pain a suffer from is far greater . Unfortunately when suffering with any long term problem most medication seems to fix one thing and create another . As for dealing with the weight issue I try to do pool exercise when I can to help keep the weight off . I think it's also good to talk to your doctor or pain clinic about it so maybe they could help you with an exercise plan you could do or diet .
