Is anyone like me? I have a runny nose all year round. I've tried everything. It's unbearable outdoors in winter, pouring literally.

I also suffer from a runny nose all year round. I have an allergy to dustmites and rhinitis. My GP also said I was allergic to my cats but it makes no difference when I have time away from them so I know it's not them. I take hayfever tablets all year round and also use Beconase nasal spray when it really gets bad, both which help. I soon know about it if I forget to take a tablet! I don't bother with the named brands of hayfever tablets (Piriton etc) as we're only really paying for the name. I take generic Cetirizine Hydrochloride tablets which a lot of shops sell (it is the one that can make you drowsy although it doesn't affect me that way). It costs me less than a £1 a week compared to £4+ for the named brands. They contain exactly the same ingredients so I don't see why I should pay extra

Hi have you tried montelukast tablets, they are for asthma, but are also used for rhinitis, they don't workfor everyone but certainly work for me and I'd say they re worth a try.

Some of those "cold" or allergy medicines can knock you out. I would check

with the pharmacy (chemist) to get the right one.

You have all my sympathy as I am exactly the same and have been for years. Often it is like someone has turned on a tap and I am always been asked about my "cold" and actually that is something I rarely have. Unfortunately, in my case nothing seems to have worked very well as in my case the various anti histamines seem to stop working after a few months. My previous doctor said that studies had shown that you should alternate the make having them for 3 month periods at a time and that did seem to help a bit but my new doctor isn't so keen. I also had a permanently sore and ulcerated throat and h gave me a spray called Fixonase which I must say has helped immensely with the sore throat but not the drip. I do hope you find something that helps and if you do please put a post on as I would literally try anything.

Yes I take loratadine all year round for perennial allergic rhinitis that has a variety of triggers - moulds, dust mites perfumes detergents pollen etc. it is worth seeing an ENT specialist tho as there may be something else going on too- a chronic sinus problem which could be treated - and may itself be indicative of something else underlying. Don't let your GP bully you.

I have had to push for an ENT referral despite having had sinusitis and a drippy nose for months and months, and when the GP-prescribed treatment didn't work I was told there was nothing else they could do. So I went back yet again, and had a secret plan to see a different doctor if that didn't work. They finally agreed to a referral.

I had to jump through a few hoops first - try all the home remedies you can and then go back and say exactly what you've tried and how it hasn't helped. Then explain exactly how the runny nose is impacting on your life - are you also suffering from a sore throat or sneezing or a sore nose from blowing it so much? Is it keeping you awake at night or stopping you from doing what you'd normally be able to do? Is it getting you down - I mean properly fed up with it? They are probably more likely to prescribe something, and it might be a home treatment thing first rather than something "medicinal", but stick with it.
