Hello loseweight23

I seem to have missed something here. If you are in constant pain why on earth would you want to do a work out DVD? Especially one you can't keep up with.

I would think your back is protesting loudly and saying STOP. I don't know what your medical condition is but this sort of exercise will do it no good whatsoever.

I would suggest you get a referral to a physio who will give you more suitable exercises.

If you can get out to see a physio (or ask for one to visit at home if you're housebound) they may be able to advise you, as Pat says. Or there might be exercise classes for people with spinal problems locally - your GP might be able to refer you to such a scheme.

I have chronic pain and for a long time this was with me for most of every day. Regular exercise has been one of the ways I've managed to combat it. I appreciate that I'm lucky enough not to have lost any of my mobility so working out isn't going to be right for everyone. But I've always found that exercise makes me feel better in myself - as I understand it, the body releases more of its natural painkillers (endorphins) during exercise. Also stretching and moving about releases stiff muscles.

I would check with a doctor before doing something that might cause you more problems. I have always spoken to the teachers of any classes I've been to and they have been able to adapt exercises to help, or have suggested alternative moves that won't upset the bits of me that hurt. I've also learnt not to be a martyr and how far I can go comfortably - if that means I'm the only one who can't do something or I've got to sit out for a bit so be it.

If you can't physically do something it could be your spine, but don't push it. I know I will never be able to do weights in a gym because of my problems and funny anatomy (well, that's my excuse). But my legs work fine so I can do dancing. If it's a good day I can go flat out in a zumba class, but I'll take it easy if it's a bad day.

Make sure you warm up / cool down properly too.

And all this coming from someone who when young, fit and free from pain used to hate exercise of any sort and was always the last to get picked for team sports in PE!

If you want to do exercise, you are better off doing aqua aerobics or pilates, but check with your doctor first. Go to a gym to do pilates as home ones aren't specific to your problems but in a class the instructir will ask you what your problems are then adjust the exercise accordingly.

Sounds like you could benefit from seeing a physio and getting professional advice on an appropriate exercise programme that doesn't make you feel worse.
