Anyone have side effects from omenectomy?

Hi everyone,

I’m after some advice. I’ve decided to have a preventative total hysterectomy with salpingo-oopherectomy (one ovary is already gone with my OC tumor - I’m one year NED so far). I also have endometriosis too, so I’m hoping this helps stop that pain too. My procedure, together with a hernia repair, is in 3 weeks.

I have to decide whether or not to have an omenectomy. Has anyone had omenectomy without lymph node removal? Have you had any side effects? I’m worried about lymphedema. I’m only 40 and have a young child, so want to keep as active as possible.

Thanks for your insight 🙏🏼

I had an omentectomy along with my hysterectomy so that the pathologist could check for any spread. (Luckily there wasn't any.) The only change I noticed was that I looked thinner around the waist for a few weeks--too bad that didn't last. I've read that it grows back after a while, but I don't know if that's true. Some researchers think that the omentum might have an immune function, but there's not much data. It shouldn't affect your lymphatic system at all because the omentum is just a fat pad. I also had one lymph node removed on each side, but never had any trouble with lymphedema. Best wishes to you. --Lani

during my TAH (and OVCA tumor removal), they removed my omentum and appendix as well. I haven’t missed them. Not sure about lymphedema. Let’s see who responds….. 🙏

I’ve had an omnectomy without lymph node removal and don’t have any apparent side effects. 😊

during my debulking, my omentum and appendix was removed due to spread. No complications and recovered fine. Look me 4 months to be back to normal. This was 2 years back.

I had an omentectomy as my OC had already spread there by the time I was diagnosed 8 years ago. No lymph node removal. The only problem I had in that area was some discomfort from adhesions, but that could have been from my diaphragm. I found that eased when I started doing exercise classes and also singing as that helped stretch what was causing the internal tightness. Even with several recurrences, I've never suffered from lymphoedema.

I had omentectomy without lymph node removal. Overall effects like many are bowel changes related to the full surgery ( sluggish at times) not specifically omentum part which I don't think causes me any ill effects.

I also had omentectomy and appendectomy along with hysterectomy, and if it made any difference, I am not aware of it!

I had my omentum removed, along with appendix and peritoneal resection, without lymph node removal, and following bilateral salpingo oophorectomy in 2019 (having had a hysterectomy in 2004). I've had no issues since.
