starting on niraparib after frontline chemo

Hi ladies, I finished first line chemo in December and my oncologist has recommended I start taking Niraparib 200mg daily in one tablet for 3 years. I’m stage 3A HGSOC and HRD+ BRCA negative and I’ve been reading quite a few posts that Olaparib seems to be mentioned more in connection with HRD+ so I’m just wondering if any of you lovely ladies can enlighten me further on this. Thanks x

I had a second round of chemo 16 years after the first round. That was in April 2022. I was put on Niraparib following that as I was considered not Platinum resistant. It is given for people with braca negative and the olaparib is given for braca positive is my understanding. It definitely has some side effects but I am dealing with them. My Ca125 level began to rise in the summer so I was offered a drug trial. This adds avastin to the parp. I am having an infusion every 3 weeks. So far things are looking good.Wishing you the best,,

good morning schnauzer19 - great name.

I had 1st occurrence last year after chemo finished was put on Olaparib 600gm per day, I’m BRCA 2 took it for 6 months but it didn’t work at all, resulting in cancer regrowing with a new tumour. My CA125 kept raising but slowly ending at 36.

Found out later it has a 40% failure. I’m now back on chemo with Caelyx.

What after I don’t know ! Oncologist said at the moment there isn’t a trail for me (HGSOC) Mentioned possible Rucaparib or tamoxifen as I’m ER positive. I’ve never had Avastin (1st line treatment 2018)and not able to have it 2nd/3rd line without paying!

Best wishes with your choice of maintenance.

Ps I have a schnauzer he’s 8 years and keeps us amused plus great for walks 😊

Avastin has come off patent in the States and this may be available in the UK soon. This would make it more affordable for the NHS and therefore may be offered ato more ladies. I would keep asking about it. I have mine 3 weekly and it seems ok. I think it is the Olparib causing muscle stiffness and lethargy. All tolerable and v grateful to be able to have it .

Hi :)

I have a similar story but it started a year ago already. I am 4a HSOC Finished chemo in June and started with Niraparib in August 2023. Was so scared as I read all kinda adverse side effects. I may have had some nausea but nothing serious really. Doc recommend to take it before sleep to minimize nausea. I do suffer however from constipation ever since. Am on 200gr daily dosis. I think is great that we have so many options to keep this beast away. Good luck 🍀

Hi, thanks for replying, that’s good to hear. I must admit the side effects don’t make for good reading do they! Reads more or less the same as chemo side effects! I’m starting on Niraparib at the beginning of March so I’ve had a few weeks reprieve. We are lucky we have these treatments available to us now. I just read your bio and I hope everything goes ok for you. If you don’t mind me asking, did you have genetic testing done for BRCA/HRD etc? Best of luck for the future x

Thank you 🙏

Yes my tumor was tested and came out negative hence they put me on Niraparib.

Am sure it will be ok !! Keep positive ! Every time I take it I am instructing pills to help my body and not cause any damage :D

Best wishes !!
