Hi, lovely ladies. Sending love to all. I've been on 200mg of niraparib since last May without any problems apart from sensitivity to the sun last summer. I've been completely fine all winter then the first sign of sun this year, even if it's a bit behind a cloud and it's back with a vengeance. I wear a hat and was in the garden most of the afternoon yesterday tidying it , without any real trouble with it as it had turned cool. I really paid for it today with any heat on my face making me feel I want to scratch my face off. It feels like I'm allergic to the sun and weirdly I don't actually have to be in it to feel the full effect. I was in an indoor heated butterfly building today at the zoo with my granddaughter and the heat brought the symptoms back again x 100. I've just taken a loratidine and slathered my face with epimax in the hope this will calm things down. Does anyone have this problem and have any tips on how to deal with it? I absolutely love gardening and am sposed to be helping my niece do hers tomorrow but I'm beginning to think I'll have to wear some kind of hazmat suit for it to be bearable.
Niraparib side effects : Hi, lovely ladies... - My Ovacome
Niraparib side effects
Hi Jaynilee, one of the side effects of niraparib is sensitivity to the sun. I am on 100 mgs. and also have to be careful when in the sunshine. Maybe your Dr. could drop your dose to 100 mgs., but they might want you to stay on the 200 dose. So sorry that you are having these issues, and hoping things will get better for you. Take care, Donna xx.
Severe sun sensitivity is a known side effect of Niraparib, and I found it got worse with time (I was on it for three and a half years). I had to rely on factor 50 sunscreen and hats from April to October, and sitting out in the sun was an absolute no no. I even got a gazebo for my garden to provide more shelter, and carried brightly coloured umbrellas as an alternative to a parasol. The effect wore off very quickly once I stopped the medication.
I was also on it for 3.5 years and I used to prickle in the sun, and had to slap on factor 50 for 20 mins at lunch time.
I think it is just a case of slip, slap, slop….. hat and high factor xx
Hi Numi, thanks for your reply. Yes I think it is worse this year. In hind sight tho, I think prevention is better than cure so I've bought some 50 factor sunblock today and a much comfier hat and no sitting in the sun for me either. I am grateful to be on it tho. I'm moving to a new house soon, which has lots of shady parts to the garden so that'll be better. Lots of long flowy shirts for me too, I think xx
Hi Jayniee, I have been on Niraparib since last July and used sun screen, however this last week when the sun was out (I was wearing long sleeves and trousers but no hat) I hadn't thought about my head as last year I was wearing a Wig. I found my head was so itchy and sore when I realised it could be the sun. I found even inside the greenhouse with out a hat was making my head sore. It is not as sore or itchy but I am going to look for some new hats. I hope you face settles down, best wishes to you
Thank you babs x I'm going to invest in new hats too x we will be able to rock that look 🤣
Hi Jayniiee. I am on the same 200mg Niraparib and also sun sensitive and a keen gardener. I wear a hat and factor 50 but also found the factor 50 spray which is non greasy and can also be used on the scalp and hair really useful as it is so easy if you are on the move and quick to apply regularly.
Hi Alice, thanks for your reply, that's good to hear. Which make do you use? Best wishes Jayne
I have been taking Niraparib for 6 weeks now and have just been reading your post. I have booked to go to Sicily in May and normally tolerate the sun really well. So is it that it causes irration or burning. Just need to be prepared! Advice welcome! Katy
Hi Katy
Yes I found it affected me straightaway even with weak sun. I'd just make sure you take comfortable hats, slather on factor 50 and have some long sleeve cotton tops. I find driving in a car with the sun through the window really uncomfortable unless my arm is covered. But cotton and suncream will be your friend, Have a lovely time x
Thank you Jaynilee. Wishing you well. Katy
