Hello,

We are working with a national newspaper to highlight the value and power of support networks for people living with advanced ovarian cancer (stage 3 or 4). Their journalist would like to speak with someone who has used an Ovacome support network (forum or support group) and learned new information about a treatment or clinical trial which went on to affect their decision/s about treatment. The journalist is particularly interested in a story where the person would not have known that information were it not for the information shared within the support network.

If you have a story like this that you are happy to share as part of a wider campaign about living with advanced ovarian cancer, then please do get in touch by emailing media@ovacome.org.uk.

Best wishes,

Laura Nott

Hello Laura,

It may be difficult to find a Teal Sister who has had such a life-changing response from someone on our forum. Could your media buddies set the goal a little lower?

It’s often the day to day difficulties we help each other with. Like sending hugs or advice on dealing with side effects. Sometimes someone will be encouraged to seek a 2nd opinion when a consensus on the forum thinks it’s advisable. I have been supported by my Teal Sisters but can think of only one thing that may fit your criteria.

I did learn about BRCA testing from this forum. I was diagnosed in 2016 and was never offered the test. I have just (Wednesday 26/05/21) asked my oncologist about this. He wasn’t my original oncologist and he said that he couldn’t understand why I wasn’t tested and he is arranging it. I don’t have children to be ‘at risk’ but there are treatments that are only available if we are BRCA positive so they won’t be available to me if I’ve never been tested, will they? I might be negative anyway but I’d like to know!

Thank you for all that you and the staff and administrators do,

Iris
