I had this problem last year - as ovarian cancer although it was not known to be granulosa until after the operation for a total hysterectomy (womb, tubes, ovaries) - it was all very messy. I was 81, and it took some getting over. It was decided by the team not to put me through chemo (it was a rare sort of tumour), and they figured that although it could well grow again there was no telling where it might locate. The relief of not having to go through chemo was almost the greatest aid to recovery I could have been given, that and the support of a loving family. I am now pretty well and have loads of things to be interested in and get on with. I think I have been very lucky, and I am so thankful for every day now. I wish you all the very best and hope that you may have as good a result.

Loving hugs

Hi

I too was diagnosed with a Granulosa cell tumour in Oct 2011. I had experienced bloating and missed periods and a scan had showed a mass in my abdomen approx 10cm by 10cm by 7cm. I had blood tests which were all clear so my consultant decided it was a complex cyst and nothing to worry about. He scheduled surgery for Sept 2011 to remove it and hoped to remove it via keyhole surgery.

Unfortunately when they went in to perform the operation they discovered the mass had grown to 16cm by 16cm by 10cm and as they tried to remove it, it ruptured so they ended up having to perform a laparatomy (open surgery). At this stage they were still not aware that the mass was sinister - this was discovered later through biopsy.

I have recovered well from my operation (it took me approx 12 wks and I have a nice 10inch scar across my bikini line) and am still able to have children as they only removed the tumour, my right ovary and right fallopian tube. They chose to leave my left side and uterus due to the fact I am young and still want to have children, although they have advised me that as a precaution when I have had my family or when I decide that I no longer want children, they will take me in and perform a total hysterectomy and remove everything to ensure it does not come back.

I did not need chemo however due to the tumour rupturing, I have been told there is a high risk of this type of tumour coming back and therefore I will be having scans every 6 months and blood tests every 3 months to check this.

My first scan and blood test were clear and i'm due another blood test this coming month.

Getting a diagnosis of Granulosa cell tumour is scary - not least because there is limited information out there about it and many consultants aren't sure how to treat it (mine included) but there is a very good recovery rate with this type of cancer and I count my blessing that mine was found and treated when it was.

I wish you lots of love, luck and health.

Hi Shirley

I had a GCT diagnosed after surgery a year ago and have had no treatment only two Cts. I was told it did not respond to chemo and could return but possibly in 20/30 years time if at all.

May I ask how old you are? I am 63 and up until this tumour have enjoyed good health and no real gynae problems.

Keep in touch

Anne
