Hi all, has anyone ever been told they cannot have chemo if they are under pain management for a bowel blockage/partial?

Hi Luk4ward,

I hope my comment helps, never had a bowel blockage but do have other bowel problems. When they flare up my consultant has said he needs to treat this (diverticulitis) first as chemo can cause sepsis if you have an infection so no chemo till infection treated . This may be why chemo is held off till blockage has been dealt with .

Hope your feeling more comfortable and chemo can continue soon

Hi Kris, Yes I can understand that. My wife is seeing the oncologist today and is been treated for an infection. We expect more chemo but maybe a review in a couple of weeks when the infection has cleared and the bowel issue behind her. Good news is my wife's (Luk4ward's) bowel has been active for almost two days and she has vastly improved the past couple of days. I am her husband and I will pass this along.

Thanks

So pleased your wife's bowel is now working. Very good news. Let's hope she can start some Chemo very soon and she'll be able to tolerate it well.

Love to you both,   Solange.  😄

Hi luk4ward

I have a problem with my bowels not a blockage but continue to have sometimes 8 days without going. I was meant to have my first chemo on the 22nd April but my oncologist put it back by 4 days to try and get the bowel working if I did not go over that weekend she was making arrangements for me to go to the local hospital. She explained that I would not get my first round until this was dealt with due to the high risk of infection with the chemo.

Hi Lukeward, I am glad things started moving, I do know how uncomfortable these things can get but never really experienced a blockage so it must be horrible.  So prunes in juice to keep up the activity.  Best wishes

I have never been told this. I am currently under pain management (wearing a Buprenorphine 7 day release pain patch on my arm) and am due to start my new chemotherapy tomorrow.

best wishes
