Anybody got mixed opinions from initial ultrasounds?.

First scan detected ovarian mass, could not say if benign tumor or not. Second scan the day after that I did privately didn't find anything of relevance ? Is this possible ?

Three years ago I had a scan done in my local Spire hospital and was told I had fibroids. At least the scan enabled my GP to refer me to a gynaecologist within a week and a TVS gave a more accurate image which happened to be ovarian cancer. The final prognosis was made after surgery and a histology report.

It sounds as though you might need a referral too in order to understand exactly what is going on.

Ultrasounds are not as good as CT scans. Obviously using high frequency sound waves that travel through soft tissue and blood vessels but then echo back when it hits something solid. The images are extremely difficult to interpret but these guys are expert at reading them. It is worrying to get differing results, my advice is to get a CA125 blood test and if its elevated then insist on a CT scan. If the scan shows enlarged ovaries then it would make sense to remove them even if benign. Xx Paul

I was admitted to A&E over three years ago with severe pain down my right hand side. As it was the weekend I was discharged as they did not do ultrasound and re-admitted myself on the following Tuesday. I had an ultrasound and was told there was a mass. The A&E consultant wanted to discharge me even though I was in crippling pain and I could not walk. Then she changed her mind and a CT scan was done which showed that I had OC. She said that she had fought for the CT scan on my behalf. I have always found it odd that even though the ultrasound showed a mass that they were reticent to do any further tests.

I am not sure that this helps but this is just my experience.

I agree with Annie and Paul, ask for a ct scan and a CA125 blood test. In my situation masses were spotted on the ultrasound scan and I then had CA125 blood test, ct scan and also mri scan. Confirmed as cancer following surgery and histology.

Hopefully if you do have a mass it is benign but best to get it checked out properly.

I was scanned (USS) in Feb 13, they reported nothing gynaecologically wrong with me, despite my symptoms. I was scanned as a private patient exactly 3 months later and the cons showed me the cysts. One of which was the size of a large grapefruit! I personally think these machines depend on the expertise of the person operating them.. Interestingly my first scan was carried out by an F2 doctor ( 2nd year out of med school), the second one was by a consultant! I have stage 3b high grade serous. Ann

Thanks ladies. My GP referred me to a gynecologist although she said i might take up to 2 weeks. Ugh. Maybe I can ask to have the blood test with the GP this week. However I was told it is not that reliable but it seems to have been accurate for you all. Hopefully I can do all tests quickly.

I am tempted to go back to the scan place that didn't see anything and challenge them. It seems crazy to have such contrasting opinions in the same day!

NICE guidelines regarding patients presentying with symptoms of ovarian cancer state that a CA125 blood test should be carried out and followed up with an USS scan. Guidelines issued by NICE in April 2011. Ann

Hi there

Welcome and sorry that you needed to be here.

I was initially told that my mass looked like a stage 4 ovarian cancer on ultrasound , then an MRI scan ( considered in the hospital to be the gold standard) reported a simple cyst ,with fibroids behind and finally the pathologist found after the operation that it was a borderline tumour.

When I looked at the offending reports they said things like ..impression , I cannot see , possible. I am sure that your reports will say the same thing.

It may be that the mass was a simple cyst that dissolved , it may be that the operator looked in the wrong place , that something has moved around in there.

An examination by a specialist , a blood test and a proper humane scan should give you a far better idea of what is going on.

Thanks thesilent and charlie, it would help if we d be in control of our medical records... I always struggle to get copies of reports and specific diagnostics here in UK.

Everything always has to go through my gp who is the slowest and laziest in the world.

Maybe i should ask for the exact report, you 're right. All I got was a phone call late on Friday with few details.
