Dr says raised ca125 nothing for mum to worry over as internal and external ultra sounds came back fine.

He tells us to repeat ca125 in three weeks time and that her fatigue is down to a high uric acid result on one of the bloods they took.

I asked if pancreas, breast, lungs, stomach need scanning and he said ca125 is for gyni issues such as ovarian cancer.

I want to be thrilled but frightened to believe all is ok.

I read that raised ca125 can mean pancreas, breast, lung or abdomen cancers too but he was adamant that she is ok.

He didn't give her anything for the gout either which makes me wonder whats happening.

Please help we have had weeks of worry and now Im concerned that she has a problem that isn't going to be found.

Mums in her 80's but normally full of life and very active.People think shes far younger. Mum cares for dad with dementia and my aged aunt as I live quite a distance away.

There are many other reasons why a ca125 is raised so not necessarily cancer (for instance a urine infection) if she has been investigated and they have found nothing maybe this is the case, and if they are taking it again in three weeks then please try not to worry love x G x

(I know it is easier said than done though)

Gwyn is right, there could be many reasons, none of them linked to a problem. The medical team sound as if they're building in all the safeguards in your Mum's case, so try not to worry.

All the best

In this case I would trust the doctor, for three weeks at least. TV ultrasound is the recommended first test and it is usually pretty reliable. Alas, CA125 isn't - mine tripled when all that was wrong was mild heat stroke. All sorts of things can affect it - I think it's true to say that, for a mildly elevated CA125 - i.e. within two or three times normal limits, there are more benign explanations than malignant ones. But, if the next test comes back higher I personally would ask for an urgent referral to a gynaecologist. Best wishes to you and your mother. Cxxx

I am sure he ran a standard panel not just ca125 - there are other markers for different conditions and he really wouldn't be dismissing them if there were other signs so I would trust and wait for now. It is also in itself largely irrelevant - it isn't a measuring stick - trends are the thing that tell stories, and that will show in subsequent test(s). Try not to panic; I know how hard that is after nursing both parents with cancers for several years, when they kind of couldn't help each other any more. It is very tough. Don't take it all on your shoulders too hard, will you?
