what do we eat?

Bronchiectasislady69 profile image

I have silent reflux and just 2 silly questions! I have sent for the cook book not here yet! I am vegetarian. Happy to eat a plate of veg but cannot stand it without gravy? Any suggestions? Vege stock?

And I have read Digestive Biscuits ok but no other buscuits allowed? Does everyone eat digestive biscuits with no consequence?.

I know exactly what we must NOT eat but finding it really hard to know what we can especially trying to plan meals?

Any suggestions gratefully received. Doctor said no nutritionist to see as there is none for acid reflux?

Digestive biscuits gave me instant symptoms but everyone has different triggers and thresholds of those triggers causing symptoms. I'm pretty much symptom free now but when it at its worst I had porridge for breakfast with banana, maple syrup and almond milk with mixed nuts. Lunch was soup or a smoothie and dinner would be something like roasted veg in a low fat pesto or veggie sausages with sweet potato and spinach. Try and keep your diet as varied as possible and honour your hunger and fullness cues. Hope that helps.

Hi Jaby86

Thank you for your reply. I sent for the Acid Reflux Book and some of the recipes are ok. I have started eating Porridge and Bananas so sounds like I am on the right track. On the shopping today I have ordered sweet potato and I have eaten vege sausages but I have been a bit afraid to eat them at present but may give them a go. I think it’s light meals but not to under eat which what I have been doing lately as actually getting a bit afraid to eat at all as scared of the result! Although I have had a few bad heartburn episodes in the past I have never experienced anything like this. I feel like I have a heavy cold all the time and with my lung problems it’s not good.

I haven’t ever been one for alcohol. Only ate spicy or fatty foods occasionally. Dark Chocolate was my favourite.

Hoping my new Dairy free diet will help and the Gaviston and Omeprozole too. 2 weeks in and not much improvement so far?

Thank you for your help tho

Best wishes

It is often trial and error. There are things I avoid, Citrus fruits etc, but there are somethings which are on the 'don't eat too much of' that I can eat. I just tried things that I liked, within reason, to see the result.

Thanks Jean for your reply. I have got this awful silent reflux and chest problems too. All this mucous is horrible and keeping it off my chest is never ending. I have been following Dr. Kauffmans thing on UTube and I was impressed so I sent for his acid reflux diet book. I am sticking to all the suggestions. Lots of veg and fruit. Still a bit confused with putting meals together tho? Some of the recipes a bit complicated for me. I hate cooking!,She thinks vegan is best. I am a vegetarian and lived on Quorn and Plant based food but I did buy things to put in the freezer. I lived on salads and tomato based spagetti and sweet and sour Quorn recipes. I cannot say my diet was really that bad really. Not enough veg though. I am on week 4 of the Acid reflux diet and not that much change really. Hopefully early days. Any suggestions that you eat would be a help. I know what you mean about trying things tho. I have gone Dairy free and actually happy about that. Like all the Alpro and milk etc but tried to put a wee bit of Parmesan on my jacket potato and omg the mucous was horrendous so no form of cheese again ☹️

Hoping to see a Gastro Doc soon to know what on earth is going on?

Take care and any suggestions for Dinner appreciated

Thanks Mona x

I think from what you say that your silent reflux may be worse than mine. I have a hiatus hernia, and a lung problem. I went through a period of getting very breathless after eating, but that has calmed down. I am not vegetarian or vegan, and eat some dairy. I avoid cream etc as it makes my sinuses block up.I am lucky in that my husband does most of the cooking. They say that tomato based sauces are not good for reflux, but it is the only sauce I like really, and we have it with pasta. Not too often and it is ok for me.

Rarely have fried stuff, I poach eggs. Do have stirfry, which has little fat, and have cashew nuts with veg, noodles and a bought sauce, which goes down ok.

I can actually cope with a mild curry or a kind of vegetable stew that my husband makes. We usually have a container of home made veg soup in the fridge for lunches.

I like multigrain brown bread and corn bread made at our local bakery as toast, but cannot cope with thick slices or too much at a time. That's when I have difficulty swallowing.

We run out of ideas sometimes, and go for what is easiest. I'm not sure whether this is helpful. As we aren't veggie of course, we have fish and meat, though not all the time. We only have fresh fruit for afters, and muesli, home made granola and fresh fruit for breakfast

Good luck with working out what will be best for you. I hope the gastro doc helps you. I found that knowing what was actually happening, and causing problems, even if they weren't curable helped me panic less when having choking and swallowing problems, and now feel much more in control. It's learning how to manage the problem ( and I have a few of those) with information from experts that helps. I have a really good GP aswell.

Hi Jean

Thank you so much for your info and suggestions for meals. I think I am getting very anxious at meal times now and I know that’s not helping. My diet before was not that bad before but I was never very keen with veg except peas and carrots. I am wondering if I am taking the acid diet cookbook to much to heart. I am like you I do like tomato sauce on my pasta but not allowed in the book nor gravy? I cannot eat all this veg without something on them, I do wonder if I can tolerate perhaps a casserole too?

I agree I do hope the Gastro Doc can tell me what exactly is causing this? I too have a Hyitas Hernia diagnosed in 2008 but up to now has not given me too much heartburn etc.

Unfortunately my Doctor is absolutely useless. I went to her 3 times and she just said o dear just try these nose drops and wait a year to see an ENT Doc. She thought it was an allergy and left it t that! After trying to find out what allergy I had? Dust mites? My cat? Or pollen.? I messaged my Health Centre and asked for an Allergy Blood Test in the end which I was allowed. It was negative. Then I booked an ENT privately. It was him that diagnosed LPR as he found acid in my throat.

I am now waiting to see my private Gastro Doc.

I do agree with you about managing this. I was doing ok with my COPD and Bronchiectasis and winter misery with it but I kept cheery. This has really got me down and my Anxiety is awful which I know doesn’t help with this problem.

Thanks for your reply and hope you keep well

I do feel for you. I do think that too much worrying won't help, nor do you necessarily need to ban absolutely everything that the cook book says.

Try small amounts of things you like, and see what the effect is. Are you taking any medication such as omeprazole, or Gaviscon. You can counteract some effects with that.

Are there any better GP practices nearby. You could really do with better NHS support.

I would just try experimenting with different foods and see what you can manage without too much effect. It's a balance. You may need to be strict on some things, but being able to have some enjoyable things is important.

Take care x

Hi Jean

Thank you so much for your last reply. I have been doing this bland boring diet for a month now so yes I am going to try and do some small amount of some of my comfort food. The only good side of this is I have lost over a stone. My husband has been doing this with me and as he has a heart condition he has lost weight too, which is good for him.

Today I went out for a walk with a friend at a National Trust and we had a coffee after. Mine Oat milk and decaffeinated as per usual. I ogled the cake and biscuits but declined. A bit afraid to try really but wondered whether gluten free might be safe?

I may email my Health Centre again tomorrow and ask again for a dietician advice again. My friend who is Gluten free had lots of advice from one down there. My very unhelpful doctor said there wasn’t a reflux dietician. Surely Acid Reflux must be quite a bigger problem than Gluten free?

Thanks Jean you have been far more helpful than my Health Centre

Stay well and Best wishes
