has anyone taken Famotidine before
Hello. You don't mention what exactly you are being prescribed this medication for. Is it a long term or short term condition? I have a lung condition called, bronchiectasis and as I have acid reflux it is possible acid could get into my lungs. I was advised therefore, to take a low dose of Omaprazole to prevent this happening.Although both Omaprazole and Famotidine treat similar gastrointestinal conditions they are not the same. Famotodine is an H2 blocker and Omaprazole is a PPI.
Omaprazole has a cumulative effect which is not so with Famotidine. Although Omaprazole is considered a more effective drug when compared it may have some adverse effects when taking it long term(osteoporosis).
I would talk with your doctor and find out now long you can expect to be on Famotidine and if there are any long term adverse effects. If possible perhaps you may be able to
consider making lifestyle changes such as your diet which may help.
Anyway, I hope your experience with this drug works and you feel better soon.
Cheers and best wishes.
RoadRunner44 has given very good information.
In addition I do like to suggest that not all medicines and brands work for everybody, all patients are unique specimens with individual underlying conditions. So if H2 blockers wont help manage symptoms then next obvious option is PPI, a bit faffing about between brands will be required to check which one works or not. Typically GP's will also try and get away with low cost prescriptions within those groups.
Lifestyle changes can help greatly depending upon you individual case history and pathway.
I suggest also to have a look on factual information on Acid Reflux on opa.org.uk/ under the Acid Reflux drop down menu.
In addition this forum and the main OPA forum here has past experiences of users which can be availed by using the search function. There's a great deal of information in old threads as well, if you haven't gone through these yet.
best wishes.
I’m currently on famotidine. I’ve steadily worked my way through different drugs (lansoprazole, omeprazole, domperidone, ranitidine, nizatidine). None of them are perfect. Famotidine has reduced how much I cough which is fantastic, but the stomach pain is worse. So I’m waiting to talk with my gastric surgeon about this. He links up with my GP and respiratory doctor to try and work out next steps.
